    The start of school.

I was able to give my youngest and my wife a blessing last night before the first day of School for both of them today. It is something that I look forward to and have cherished since the first day we ever sent a child to school. Something that I mentally and spiritually start preparing for about a week before school starts.

If only I prepared for everything at Church this way I am sure I would be a much better member than I am.

The blessing I was able to give my daughter in her dorm room Saturday night is something that I will hold dear for life. Very special.

If it is something you do....continue to do it. If it is a habit you aren't in or just didn't think about it/get around to it....I encourage you to do so.

agreed. I gave my youngest and middle daughters blessing for the first day of school last night. It was indeed special.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

I almost started this exact thread this morning but then got sidetracked so thanks The Tick for starting it.

I'm not an emotional guy, at least on the outside, but I started to cry as I blessed one of my daughters last night. It was a great experience and very spiritual.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Agreed, while my testimony on much of the church is shaky, giving my children blessings, especially ones like these, always seem to prop it up a bit.

I find it more effective to have charts and graphs of goals, expectations and projected GPAs if they don't knock off all the crap they did the year before.

We did both last night at our house. This is like the 5th time I've reminded my new 9th grader that the honeymoon is over and it's time to get serious - grades actually matter now.

Then we had some very nice blessings.

I've never had that problem with my daughters, knock on wood!

All three have been very good students and for some reason took pride in their grades.

We've got 5 kids, and we did back to school blessings. One year when our youngest was three, she saw all the blessings, and without a word, got into the chair to claim her blessing. It was the sweetest thing ever.

None of my kids have ever wanted blessings, until this year when my girl who is going into first grade this year was freaking out the night before. This time she agreed to get one and that is what calmed her down.

I've offered them to both my school age kids and no one has taken me up on it until now.

When do you think this trend started?

I remember getting blessings before school as well growing up. Is there something in the handbook that says it is a good idea for a father's blessing at certain times, back to school being one of them? Or was this one of the more cultural things in the church that has caught on?

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

We've got 5 kids as well and my 20 month old did the same thing. So adorable.
