  • God and conference realignment

I can't understand why anyone with a genuine testimony of the restored gospel would be worried about BYU's conference affiliation when everything will be determined by a meeting of the apostles in the temple tomorrow morning.

If apostles are making the decision, then why should a true believer worry?

    I'm not worried.

The church is only interested in exposure, not in what is competitively the best solution.

As long as we are bringing religion into this I can't believe this move does much to help the churches image. With this move they are telling everyone in the MWC that they are to good for them and they are destroying the WAC. The only place it may help is in Missoula if Montana gets an invite to join the WAC to save that conference.

Exposure is only good if you are a winner. If they end up independent and playing mostly shit teams, who is going to watch, people who love church basketball that's who.

Somebody better be thinking more than, hey we can put in on TV where millions have access, therefor they will watch. Doubt it.

If Utah is playing USC and BYU is playing Idaho St., even in Utah more TV's will be turned onto the Utah game.

The mini dome in Pocatello is a wonderful place to watch a game in November when the wind is blowing and snow is falling outside. It may not be Southern California but its damn close.

I apologize. Idaho has great schools and there is a lot of interest in Idaho throughout the nation. I probably should have used the example of BYU playing Wyoming.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

The Lord's team will be playing in the Lord's conference.

That will get you kicked out of the Lords conference.

Well, the BYU has to do something with the 50 million dollar HD truck and the half billion PLUS broadcast center that they are building with tithing money.

Going indy and using those resources to subsidize the deal seems the way to go.

Kills two birds with one stone.

My purely speculative take on this (which is informed by some conversations with A Person In A Position To Know) is that the BOT is getting more and more interested in using BYU to showcase the church's values. For example, in admissions standards they may give more emphasis to well-roundedness (including spirituality) and less to high grades and test scores. I'm pretty sure about that one.

In athletics, the BOT might think it is just fine for BYU to be more like Navy than like Notre Dame or Texas, because that may be the best way to use BYU to support the church's mission. But I have no information about that, it's just a guess. Would anyone be surprised if that's what the Brethren think?

This is not unusual for faith-based universities with a mission. I remember when I was a kid back in the 60s - Notre Dame broke with decades of tradition and played in a bowl game. (The Cotton, I think.) It was a big deal at the time. For the previous 40 years or so they had a policy of not playing in bowls.
