Is playing poker a sin?

I've recently taken up poker. I find it fun, exciting, and for whatever reason, I'm fairly good at it (well, until there's about five people left in a tourney and then it seems like I have a "sucker" sticker taped to my forehead).

At any rate, what do you guys think?? Is it a sin?

Seems to me like tournament style poker (rather than cash games) is pretty harmless. You know going in that you are paying a certain amount to get into the game and that's all you can lose. If you just go in with the mindset that you are willing and happy to lose all of your buy-in for the tournament, then I don't see much wrong with it.

I really like the daily Texas Hold'Em event at the Venetian and I try to play that game whenever I am in Vegas. It is pretty low-key, mostly tourists and casual players, but I have played a few hands against people you see in the WSOP -- even took some chips from Scotty Nguyen once.

Is it taking you further from Christ or driving the Holy Ghost away? If the answer is yes, I'd say it's a sin. If the answer is no, well then...You got to know when to hold em'...

I first learned to play poker as a kid. All my buddies and I played 5-card draw in our basement for bottlecaps or Monopoly money. It's a great card game.

I do have an extended family member who says we should not play with "face cards" on Sundays. I've always thought that was funny. We do it all the time.

I have to agree with SU on this one. I can't say that I find the concept of "sin" very interesting or useful. "Progressive/Regressive", "Constructive/not constructive", etc seem much more productive to me.

And to avoid the "non-responsive" strike, I'd say that no one but you can assign those labels.

Agreed. I think that he among us who is without unconstructive or regressive acts in his life should cast the first stone.

i would rather play poker than do just about anything else. i play quite a bit online as well. i end up breaking even, so it's a fun way to pass the time. i do have set and strict limits, though, and will not deviate from them. if you're playing a cash game/online, remember that you need to set both an upper and lower limit. don't be afraid to cash out.

I've actually stopped playing cash games...I find it far more boring. So, I do small-stakes tourneys/sit 'n gos. the last week, I've averaged about 4X the buy-in. It's not great money, but it is better than losing.

Have any of you ever played the "rush poker". It's a $4 buy in. It's fun if you don't like the boredom of waiting for everyone to play their hand in a regular game.

On the other hand it must attract a multitude of idiots. I go all in with trip Kings on the turn and I had been betting the pair. Dud calls. No aces on the board. He hits a gut shot straight.

About the same thing happened later and guy hits a flush, runner, runner. Normally I like playing with such idiots, but in the on line games more bull crap seems to hit than normal.

i play 3-4 rush poker tables at a time. it's a completely different style of play than a live game. most of the people you see with big stacks at rush poker tables are people who don't really play poker, they just play all day and will push all in pre-flop with pocket rockets and pray someone calls.
