I don't like to recreate on the Sabbath. No golf. No snowboarding. But I'll watch football, golf and basketball on TV.

Where was that branch president when Jesus and his disciples were plucking ears of corn on Sunday?

I don't think any responsible Mormon parent can live without those videos. What better way to teach your children to grow up to be responsible temple married, God fearing Mormons than a bunch of white guys rapping about being the sons of Lehi.

I wonder why members are so concerned with what their member neighbors are doing on a Sunday? It really seems to bother them if someone is doing something out of the norm.

What a dick. I can't even figure out the rational behind this one. How is "spending money" breaking the Sabbath. I get the "making people work" thing, but not all spending of money = making people work. It's like these people just don't think or something.

When I first read this, I thought you were talking about the 19 year old mtc district leader. Now I realize you are talking about someone who REALLY should have known better. Yikes.

I recently participated in a volleyball tournament in Manhattan Beach, CA called the Charlie Saikley 6-Man. The tournament is a lot of fun with pool play on Saturday and tournament play on Sunday. The team I play on is primarily comprised of Utah connected people and, as a result, has many LDS people on it. A number of the guys would not play on Sunday.

I've never understood the prohibitions people create for Sunday. Usually they are a quagmire of conflicting things. For example, my wife's family won't swim on Sunday but they will play basketball with family members or some other version of outdoor games. Basically, their rule seems to be, outdoor family activities are allowed if they don't involve swimming. I know a family that won't play sports but plays games. I guess their rule is that you can play on Sunday but you can't sweat. Personally, I think we can be violating the Sabbath if we do so much "church work" that we don't gain the benefit of the day off but I don't know many LDS people that agree with me on that.

To answer the original question, I have decided to handle the Sunday issue with my family through consultation and agreement with my wife. It doesn't matter what we do as long as we both agree it is OK to do what we are doing.

Technically, aren't we supposed to use Saturday to "prepare for the Sabbath?"

How much of Saturday? Define "prepare for the Sabbath".

Well, that's the issue. I can remember GC talks about "preparing for the Sabbath," but again, I don't know what that means. It would seem that Q12 and up regard the Sabbath as far more "holy" than we seem to do in my house.

We clean the house, and we shop at the store,
So we won’t have to work until Monday.
We brush our clothes, and we shine our shoes,
And we call it our get-the-work-done day.
Then we trim our nails, and we shampoo our hair,
So we can be ready for Sunday!
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I always get a kick out of when the church refers to preparing for General Conference. Just exactly how are you supposed to prepare? Does that mean setting your DVR to record it on BYU-TV ahead of time?
