  • The Liahona

Here is a fantastic article from the Mormon Times on the Liahona.

    I will summarize:

Don't mock the Liahona based on the fact that the magnetic compass wasn't invented until much later than 600 BC. People were using magnetic hematite in South America as early as 2000 BC.

Besides, the Liahona wasn't a compass in the modern sense. The Liahona actually had things written on it and was controlled by the power of God. Think of it more as a magic 8 ball. Pre-muslim arabs had their own version of the magic 8 ball, which makes the existence of a Liahona even more feasible. Furthermore, the early magic 8 balls were actually kind of like arrows with inscriptions that were used for travel.

I'm a bit confused. If the Liahona showed up on their doorstep with the clear implication that it was created and delivered by God, what the hell difference does it make about Arab magic 8-balls and South American hematite?

Dude, Sooner posts something that's faith promoting and you start cussing? I'm a bit confused.

I should say that the Liahona is one of the better stories in the BOM. I would think that if you took the action-packed parts of the BOM, embellished them, and combined them with some of the fantastic superstition in the BOM, you could end up with decent a Lord of the Rings-type movie.

Think of the Liahona as a kind of iPhone with a limited coverage map.

I always liked Mike Waters's theory that the Liahona was a GPS unit.

It article doesn't help me understand what the difference is between the English version Liahona and the Ensign online. Perhaps the Liahona doesn't have the always fun, "I have a question" section?
