Eliminating it all together. I of course agree with keeping them in balance with other things.

      • I'm sitting in a Stake Priesthood meeting and a member of the stake presidency just declared Danny Ainge as one of the greatest athletes in the history of the United States.

        Amen
I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.

I had a kid in my mission that was raised in a no tv house. We were in the same district as greenies. Several times we worked together for the day during district leaders splits. Every time we were in someone's house teaching and the tv was on the room, he would sit there slack jawed with his eyes glued to the set. Not even a polite "Ahem" could break his gaze. It took a full-on elbow to the ribs. It was really quite embarrassing.

DevilDog said that they initiated a media fast basically 8 weeks ago and already the kids have their cell phones and stereos back and that when they really want to watch TV, they drive somewhere to watch it. That isn't anywhere near the 1 year that the woman in my ward was talking about today.

So my observation was accurate. People profess media fasts but rarely stick to them. It is almost impossible.

I don't care if people watch or don't watch. That isn't what my post was about.
We don't watch tv on Sunday (otherthan the super bowl) in my house. If something is on we want to see, we record it and watch it on Monday. It's been 11 years since I've watched anything on tv on Sunday in my house, which means we stick to it.

EDIT: MJ did turn on the tube to see the 9/11 specials this year and I listened to the radio for game 4 of the AL championship series when the Red Sox came back and beat the Yankees. Not a perfect record but very close.

I don't allow toy guns at my house (at least not ones that are plastic replicas of the real thing) because I actually have guns at my house. The guns at my house are locked up, but I don't want to have any mistaken identity problems. You can't fix dead.

Guns that don't look like real guns (most of the Nerf stuff, super soakers, etc.) are okay.

FYI I haven't watched TV except for the occasional game since and maybe a glimpse in a hotel room every now and then for over ten years. It hasn't been hard, like fasting from eating shit. The other day in Boston I turned on HBO and there was this porn show on where naked people were mud wrestling, etc.; I can't even remember what else. It was revolting. That's the best word for it, and HBO is supposed to be the leading entertainment portal on TV.

That's funny. Posts like this illustrate why you seem so out of touch sometimes.

Just curious. What other forms of media do you avoid? Radio? Movies?

In another thread I posted that I downloaded a few HBO shows. They carry some of the very best shows in the history of TV but fill much of the rest of their non-movie schedule with such horrible tripe that I simply refuse to subscribe to the channel again.

For every Game of Thrones, The Wire, The Sopranos, or Six Feet Under, there are plenty of schlocky, crappy garbage shows that I don't want in my house.
