We are going to Hawaii in a few months. Maybe I should try the go to church on vacation thing out.

I think on the Navajo reservation they say Yatehe (sp?) at the beginning of their talks. The SP in Tuba city in the 90s was a Hawaiian dude, though, so maybe he just brought the Aloha tradition to the rez

In Hong Kong, everyone starts their talks "Brothers and sisters, good morning", and the congregation all responds "Good morning". Also, my MP was from Hawaii and always did the "Aloha" thing, so I got very used to call and response in church talks. Having said that, when someone busts out an "Aloha" in the lower 48, I will admit that my response is frequently tepid.

Did we ever talk about Camp Bellows on the North Shore? We stayed there a bunch back in the day - has a great beach.

We drove past it but we stayed in an Airbnb right on the water at Kaneohe Bay. Gorgeous sunrises.

Church in Hawaii is great. You can go in your flip flops and you won't meet nicer people.

We do if it's convenient. Sometimes out of a sense of duty. When we visited Hawaii, I felt a strong feeling of deja vu much of the time, particularly quite strong during church. I'm not sure what I was remembering, but I loved it. I took it as a sign that I should retire there.

Do you all attend church when you vacation elsewhere? I confess, I never do.

Always, if we can. Sometimes when we've arrived in another country on a Saturday we were not able to figure out where the church was by Sunday morning. Once in Puerto Vallarta it was stake conference and we went to the wrong building before we found out. Didn't want a long taxi ride to the other one to then walk in late.

I quite enjoy visiting other wards wherever we're vacationing. We'll attend non-denominational meetings on cruise ships too, if we get the chance.

I am not opposed to the Saints in Hawaii doing it; I find it quaint and delightful. Or the Saints anywhere else doing local traditions. And if they bring that to their BYU ward, I can see that.

I was just "ugh" when the blonde vacationer showed dissapointment that her Colorado congregation didn't jump in on it. I do give her credit for not forcing a repeat to get a more robust "Aloha" response. Later in the meeting the 10-year-old daughter shared her testimony of the Spirit of Jesus being abundant in Hawaii.

That family had an awesome vacation! I'm jealous.

Yeah, I know I'm being cranky. It wasn't helped when she responded under her breath to the tepid response with, "WE do it much better in Hawaii." Come to find out, she's actually from Colorado and had just returned from a two-week Hawaiian vacay.

Reminds me of a missionary talk in our ward a while back. He started his talk with a hearty "Aloha" and got a decent "Aloha" back in return. Then he told us he isn't from Hawaii - he just likes saying "Aloha".
