South Carolina teacher suspended for reading Ender's Game to 14 year olds.

What the heck is pornographic about this book?In South Carolina a teacher has been placed on administrative leave for reading excerpts of Orson Scott Card’s science fiction classic Ender’s Game to his middle school students.
“The parent that reported him to the school district complained that the book was pornographic,” Tod Kelly writes. “[T]hat same parent also asked the local police to file criminal charges against the teacher. As of today, the police have not yet decided whether or not to file charges (which is probably a good sign that they won’t). The school district, however, appears to agree with the parent, is considering firing the teacher and will be eliminating the book from the school.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Honestly, I stopped at the word "traitors". Apologetics 101: Demonize someone who thinks differently than you.
I'm sure I'll pick this up in a few minutes, but that irritates the hell out of me.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

If you have to state that you have nothing to fear from some thing, that's a pretty strong statement that there is fear of that thing. Religion in general, and mormonism in particular, have much to fear of truth.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostHere's the column. It should be a catalyst for some interesting discussion. A couple of excerpts:
It's a good, candid read, and I think is a fine statement of the way many thoughtful believers look at Church history.
I truly hope more mormons are urged to have less fear of learning all there is to learn of mormonism. It is the fastest way to become an apostate, or as OSC calls us "traitors". The fear of learning the truth and what it might mean kept me in the church for years.Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

Doug Wright had OSC on his program today to discuss this. OSC mentioned that there appears to have been other things the teacher has read to the class that may not have been appropriate for the age, so he stopped short of defending the teacher.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostSouth Carolina teacher suspended for reading Ender's Game to 14 year olds.

He essentially said that Ender's Game is on Evangelical hit lists because he is a Mormon author. One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

I believe religion has much inherent good and has born many good fruits.

You don't find this terribly arrogant? "If you folks knew what I know, you'd be an atheist, like I am.
