Gordon tried to do away with them a few years ago. The ones I go to are spiritual now as the outgoing and incoming missionary is assigned a gospel topic not a funeral.
Joseph Fielding Smith in DOS said they get out of hand. HIs Grandson told some jokes and Oscar McConkie and him didn't like it really. Joseph Fielding McConkie was his grandson who talked about it in book.
I seen them be eulogies and laughomonies and tears of how much you will miss them. Will be back in two years it is not a funeral. Before Gordon said no more people were still assigned topics which made it bearable.
Homecomings are ok. But the meeting is about the savior not about the missionary. I was a student at Ricks College when they hosted there conference tournament. A kid at 22 decided to go on a mission. His farewell was same weekend as tournament. WAs told he was my classmate needed to go to farewell tournament no big deal.
It was big deal to me. I wound up going to farewell anyway and missed semifinals and finals of tournament. Had a letdown when I got back Sunday for missing it. Treasure VAlley and Colorado Northwestern were a big deal to me. I don't see him much anymore and did not feel a profound spiritual expereince at the farewell I would not of received had I seen Bowers sink that shot and stayed in my college ward for Sacrament Meeting. Went to small school so some people feel as classmates have obligation to go to those things.
I missed many good games but I don't feel like farewells and homecomings are something I have to be at. ARe an overrated distraction if you ask me.
One interesting farewell was were speakers took up plenty of time. We had Sacrament Meeting last and no Ward met after us but the missionary going out spent 30 minutes past the time thanking this person and that person. Mentioned his Girlfriend at the time too. That was an interesting meeting. Hardly mentioned gospel topic. Did invite Ward to dinner too at his place.
