  • If the church were to rely on lay members for volunteer lawn care

(taking care of the chapel grounds -- mowing, weeding, etc.) would you be concerned with how unkempt they could become? I have a relative in Phoenix in a bishopric and he said last Sunday that the high councilmen in a neighboring stake communicated to their wards that in a couple of months the membership there will be in charge of yard work (in addition to the regular janitorial duties).

I'm guessing that the regular folks who do it won't make it two months.

Is there any grass in Phoenix to mow?
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I believe this is a typical Arizona yard. Correct me if I am wrong:

I don't have a problem with this, provided the church provides the equipment and materials needed to maintain the building. One thing I hate about the members cleaning the buildings is that often there are no cleaning supplies or equipment to adequately do the job. I've always found my yearly (or in one case quarterly) assignment to clean the building to be a great means of worship. I've felt a stronger connection to the building and as a result of that I've felt more connected to those who worship in it.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

I heard when the meetinghouse care came out that saved enough money to build one small temple. Small temples are not being built anymore I don't think. Read that Helsinki Finland was the last one like that.

Now what do the church janitors do for 40 hours to stay busy with the new meetinghouse care program? I would think they need some proffesional care on meetinghouses to keep there ground kempts. Is anything too good for the Lord?

I was at a meeting were we had to find people to come clean off the snow from the church parking lot. They always ask people to do the grounds at the temple. I haven't cleaned it yet myself. Heard if you do you get access to Presidents office only person besides him that does. And they have there own bathrooms too.

Pretty soon they are going to be asking us to run the whole ward for free.

Personally, I don't know how I feel about this. I don't mind cleaning the church once in a while. I think it is my duty to do that. However I detest yard work unless it is on my own house. I'm going to have to mull this one over for a day or two.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I would prefer doing yard work, rather than clean bathrooms.

                      I'm with you there.

I'm not sure how it would work in most wards, but with all the retired old dudes in my ward whose yards are immaculate, I'm quite certain our building grounds would be very well kept.

The future law suits from accidents probably costs as much as having outsiders do it.

I imagine there are enough people getting mortgage assistance in Phoenix that they are probably looking for things they can have people do.

Don't worry, the church is self insured.

Yes. Assuming there is no grass on church grounds in Phoenix like myboynoah pointed out, it's probably not a big deal there. I wonder if the resulting increases in liability insurance (do you think that's something the church even carries?) premiums would be enough to justify keeping things the way they are at chapels with grass lawns, if it's even being discussed.
