This about sums up both my and Little Robin's feelings about eating meat. Faith is the vegetarian, and everyone agrees that she has made the best ethical choice. Little Robin and I are content to be ethically inferior.Originally posted by woot View PostFor example, I've come to think that eating meat is ethically problematic, and possibly even wrong, due to the great deal of harm it does to our environment, the untold suffering it causes, the great wastefulness of it in terms of food given to our animals instead of starving people, etc. I continue to eat meat anyway, as I'm just not at a point in my life where I feel I can live up to my ethical perception on that issue.

The real test comes when a job comes up where I could benefit from using the academic priced software. I confess that I have stumbled in this regard, from time to time. There have been other times when I avoided using the academic software, even though doing so made the job more difficult. I'm thinking I should slowly upgrade all of my licenses to full professional versions, so that I don't have to worry about this any longer. Lucky for me, the 3D software I use the most allows for individual professional use of the academic license.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostPhotoshop cost for Joe Sixpack: $899.00

Since you can get the academic rate for any software you like, isnt this somewhat um....

I don't use any software that I haven't legally purchased, but I don't expect everyone to live up to my standard.

To continue the train of thought (which you must know I'm diabloing) In a world of no God, how does the Golden rule trump the Silver Rule (Judas) of taking what you want because you can? The Golden rule has no value accept as a mutually agreed code of conduct, which is not unilateral in its authority. Genghis Kahn ignored it and ruled the world.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostAccepting the Golden Rule does NOT require belief in a supreme being.
It would seem in a world without constraint, evil wins 100%, but without a God there is no evil, just people being people.Last edited by clackamascoug; 04-28-2010, 01:13 PM.

So at item #13,453, you pull out software piracy. The truth is, I used to have Photoshop 3.1, back in the day. I still have 4,000 mp3's. I play royalty free performance on YouTube.
Item #22,478 is parking in the "senior only" parking at church, and claiming I'm old enough.
Item #784 is Income Taxes. Let's just say I try to pay as little as possible.
Item #234,990 is home teaching. Yes I wave when I drive past.

I have used lots of pirated software over the years, but I don't think I've ever pirated something that I expected to get any significant use out of.
For example, I've actually used a pirated copy of Photoshop in the past. I was a student at the time who didn't even own a digital camera. I scanned a few pictures and messed around with making the people in them look extra fat, balding, etc. It was fun. But it only lasted for a week and then I never used it again. There's no way I would have used it enough to justify $900, or even the academic $199 price.
Price-to-use comparison is usually the motivator for pirating software for me. If I think I might need the software for something but would likely never use it again, my guilt in pirating that software goes waaaaay down. If, on the other hand, I were a professional photographer using Photoshop all the time as part of my living, I would feel much more guilty. Plus I would want to buy it to get all the updates, etc. that come from Adobe. Plus Adobe makes it pretty hard to crack their software, so you really have to hunt to find a workable copy of any of their products.
The one piece or category of software that I've used consistently but never paid for is software used for burning illegal copies of DVDs. Since I'm already committing a pretty big ethical breach by burning the DVD in the first place, and since the software that facilitates that ethical breach is illegal in the US in the first place, I don't seem to have a problem pirating it.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. What about when I buy a movie and burn a copy. Then later I sell the disk at a garage sale. Do I need to remove the digital copy?

Piracy is not stealing. It's copyright infringement. They're both illegal, but they're not the same thing.Originally posted by The_Tick View PostStealing is stealing. Doesn't matter how to attempt to justify it.
I don't do it, and when I find out my friends do it alters my opinion of them.
Movies, Music and software should all be purchased or rented.
