  • JST of Exodus 20:8

My brother and I both put in for the lottery distributing tickets to this year's Ryder's Cup in Wales. I was notified today that my number got pulled, and I got four tickets for Sunday, the final day. My brother and his wife planned to join me and my wife on the trip to Wales, and we're psyched -- except, now my brother and his wife are having second thoughts because our tickets are for Sunday, the Sabbath. ??????????????

Umm, I'm really grateful for the JST of Exodus 20:8, specifically footnote b: "Thou shall keep the Sabbath day holy, except for time spent in Wales during the final day of the Ryder Cup." How convenient!

But my brother doesn't believe in the JST. Am I crazy for thinking that he's crazy and it's okay to attend the Ryder Cup on a Sunday?

And yet I recognize some dissonance in myself b/c I wouldn't attend the Super Bowl -- too cheap and commercial of an event. There seems to be something holy about walking on a pristine golf course on Sunday.

There are two events that I would attend no matter what, except for a birth or death of a family member. Those are a Super Bowl or the Masters.

There are more events I'd attend on a Sunday and the Ryder Cup would be one of them. That would be amazing to see. Just find a chapel nearby and attend the morning services then skip over to the golf course. However, I wouldn't ridicule (not that you are doing that) my brother for not wanting to attend. In fact, if he doesn't want to go I'm sure I can find two people to take his spot.

Just to put this into perspective. I know a mission president that attended the super bowl. Some things you just can't pass up.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

When I won tickets to the 2003 NBA Finals, the game I won tickets for was a Sunday game. My mother was surprised (almost shocked) when she learned that we weren't planning on selling the tickets and spending the day in the hotel room. BTW, I had been out of the house for 5 years and married for 2 years at this point.

In retrospect, the game was super-de-duper boring (with the exception of Malik Rose's Dunk on Dik) and the Arena in NJ is a dump. I should have spent the evening out on the town in Manhattan. I think the halftime score was 33-30. Yay for the reign of the Spurs to have ended, is all I can say.

Everyone's a hypocrit. It's a question of what you're hypocritical about, and to what extent.

Frankly, I'm too old to care about it so I'd go. Of course, I do, and would break the sabbath in many other ways. It's not exactly one of my strong suits.

We were at the Ryder Cup Saturday and Sunday four years ago in Ireland. If its been raining, the course will not be pristine. But a holier sepulcher you'll not worship at.

The Sabbath was made for Man, and not Man for the Sabbath, or something like that.

I would go to the Ryder cup on Sunday in a second. Congratulations! You're going to have a great trip.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Wow -- that must have been awesome.

My brother was just notified that his number was pulled for tickets on Thursday and Friday. So that solves that. I think I may still keep the Sunday tickets, though, b/c I'll keep a prayer in my heart that the US wins, and that may result in more praying than I usually do on the Sabbath.
