DoctorCoug: This sort of thing happens to me all the time. Welcome to the club. If you're not 100% on board with the Church, then you become a target. It doesn't matter if you're missing church to heal sick people (or in my case attempting to generate sick mice). They'll come to your house at all hours of the night to read you scriptures about sloth.

The Bishop sent me a text last month asking if he could have someone provide dinner for my family. You see, my wife didn't want to go to church because she was tired and I have been working a lot so no one went to church for a few weeks. My wife, because she couldn't just say that she didn't want to go to church, told a lie. She is the Laurel's Instructor and told the YW President that she was sick. YW President told the Bishop and the Bishop sent me a text. I responded to a text with "No thanks, we'll be alright."

End of story, right? Wrong. Bishop himself showed up with dinner. Seems he got my text but thought he would have his wife make dinner and he would bring it by over my assurance that such a thing was unnecessary. I was in the process of cooking up a nice mess of red beans and rice with andouille (sp) sausage when he knocked on my door. I found the whole situation rude, pushy, irritating, frustrating and obnoxious. The Bishop asked if there was anything else he could do and I told him that I didn't need what he was doing so I wasn't sure what to say to get him to leave us alone. He took it the way it was meant and left.

How could I and should I have handled this better? Personally, I think I handled it as well as I could but I'm sure CUF's more righteous and charitable membership can direct me.

Sometimes, members of the Church use the teachings to satisfy their own desires to be busy bodies involved in others' lives. It is rude and out of line.

Even my Bishop has told a little white lie to make life easier before (although I'd just as soon hear the truth next time). Other than that, I don't have a problem with the way you handled it. It was pretty straightforward, and hopefully it'll make his life easier next time too.

Having said that, being a Bishop would suck big-time. Bless you Bishops for the crap you endure from me, and people like me.

          dang, you aren't kidding.

This thread is filled with complaints about one-off visits from Bishops, free dinners, and kind-hearted gestures.

Sometimes I wish Cleon Skousen were right, then I could hop on a meteor to outer space, get away from this crazy orb and hang out with my peeps from Manasseh.

No means no. No, I don't need your help. No, I don't want you to bring by a really large dish of curry. No thank you, we are doing OK, we just need a little time to get things back in order. Some people might say no and mean yes but if I say no, I won't appreciate you stopping by.

Sometimes I try to do things but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to, and I get real frustrated and then like I try hard to do it, and I like, take my time but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to. It's like, I concentrate on it real hard, but it just doesn't work out. And everything I do and everything I try, it never turns out. It's like, I need time to figure these things out, but there's always someone there going “hey K-Dog, you know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately, you know? You need to maybe get away. And like, maybe you should talk about it, you'll feel a lot better.” And I'm all like “oh, nah, it's ok, you know. I'll figure it out. Just leave me alone, I'll figure it out, you know? I'm just working on it by myself.” And they go “well, you know, if you wanna talk about it, I'll be here, you know? And you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it. So why don't you talk about it?” I go “no, I don't want to! I'm ok. I'll figure it out myself!” But they just keep bugging me, they just keep bugging me, and it builds up inside.....

Okay, you didn't say he brought curry. Was it Japanese style curry? I hope he didn't forget the rice. And it had better be good Japanese rice. None of that long grain crap. That would really get me mad.

I like how you are equating an honest gesture of kindness with a hormonal teenage boy's aggressive sexual behavior.

But yes, no does mean no. Perhaps your wife should just tell people the truth next time.
                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

You know about as much about his genuine motives as he knows about yours for not attending Church. Get the ef over it and move on, he probably meant no harm.

Curry? I missed that the first time through.

K-Dog. You should have just put the curry in the fridge to eat later and thanked the bishop. It is great for leftovers as the flavor actually improves in a day or two.

                        Exactly! Especially the potatoes. Hmmmmm.

I'm making curry tomorrow. I'm not planning to share any of it outside the family. Don't ask for any. No means no.

Hey Noah, I've notice you've been a bit grouchy lately. Could I come by tomorrow night sometime... just to check up. Probably about 6:00 or 7:00, or whenever you think the food will be done time is right.

I can't speak for any other Bishops but it has been a great experience for me. However realizing that when you say or do something stupid, give bad advice, or just have a bad day and know these can have major effects on people is a little scary. He more I read CUF posts like this the more I wonder how many complaint threads or blog posts have been about me.

I try and do what I think is right but sometimes I screw up I literally pray that my shortcomings won't lead to anyone having negative feelings about the church.
