  • Gospel Library iPhone App

Has anyone else downloaded & tried out the new Gospel Library iPhone app? It is an "official" publication by the LDS Church. I found out about it last night from the home page of lds.org.

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gospe...365223775?mt=8

Back when I had a PocketPC, I used the YanceyWare reader. It was great because you could get just about any LDS publication. You could annotate and bookmark verses.

This one looks like it has all the features that I liked about Yancey. I just downloaded the SW as well as the Hymnal and Gospel Principles. There is a very decent selection of other LDS publications available. You also have the ability to create and save cross-references between two verses, in addition to being able to annotate or bookmark verses.

Conference talks from a few General Conferences ago are available for download. I'm sure in the near future many additional GC talks will be up. Downloading is simple--much easier than Yancey's system. After I installed the app, I was able to manage my library from within the app and downloaded everything I wanted in a few minutes. Pretty slick.

The app also gives you the option to open up a new window (just like how the Safari browser works on the iPhone) so you can look at a second reference without losing your place at the first. A "full screen" mode lets you fit a little more text on the screen. One noticable feature that is missing is a landscape view. I imagine that the next version would include that feature.

Anyway, it's nice to be able to consolidate everything into one app like Yancey did. I no longer need to download the Gospel Principles lesson on the browser each week.

I just found the "Night Viewing" option, which presents the text as white on a black background for those low-light reading situations.

I'm annoyed that there never seem to be good BlackBerry versions of these apps.

I was about to plop 15 bucks on a gospel library app. Someone showed this one to me the other day, I downloaded it and am so very glad I didn't waste 15 dollars.

It's coming. The same program is being developed for the BlackBerry as well.

It's kind of cool the way the Church is doing it--encouraging the programming community to get involved and create the programs. Mobile Gospel library is being programmed for:
            • Android
            • BlackBerry
            • ePub (Sony Reader, B&N Nook)

            • Amazon Kindle
            • WebOS (Palm Pre, Palm Pixi)

Unfortunately, it still lacks the option to auto scroll, add your own content, etc. The 15dollar app you can add any yanceyware file, it has the hymns in pdf (with notes, etc), even has audio recordings of conference.

I'm guessing that some of these things will be addressed in later updates. As far as audio recordings of conference, I can get those for free with the LDS radio app.

I agree about the pdf versions of the hymns. That would be nice. Of course it would also probably take up a lot more memory. The text-only files are surprisingly small.

I have an app called "LDS Hymns" that has most of the music and words (presented just like sheet music) in the hymn book. It's quite slick.

Thanks. Downloading now. Ideally, the sheet music would be combined with the Gospel Library App for two reasons: it's cool to have an all-in-one, and (most importantly) it would include all hymns, rather than having to exclude several that are still copyrighted.
