  • We are overdue for a scandal.

All the other major religions have scandals. David Miscavige (Scientology) has been punching his underlings for years. The Catholics have been harboring some very bad priests. We've all heard about the anti-gay gay pastors like Ted Haggard.

How is it that our apostles remain so pristine? When was our last big scandal that involved bad behavior on the part of an apostle? I know we've had some lower level GAs with problems, but I can't seem to remember an issue with an apostle in my lifetime.

I seem to remember that there were a couple of apostles excommunicated for adultery way back in the early to mid 20th century, but that's all I can remember.

I hope we stay overdue. If anything, an LDS politician on the national stage will probably be our next scandal, long before one of the 70+ year olds starts fooling around. While I don't always agree with their decisions, I like to think that the Q12 are righteous men.

I really do believe that the Q of the 12 is full of some really upstanding citizens. Good people.

I'd like the next big Mormon scandal to be Glenn Beck.

This is closely tied to the "Confidence in Church Leadership" thread.

The 15 in the FP & twelve are the cream of the cream. The weeding out process is far too rigorous to provide otherwise. Sorry.

So this makes me wonder how the process has changed since they had the adultery problem in the early 20th century.

Did they ever have apostles that were closet polygamists? This would also have been an interesting situation.

I think it has to be the average age of the Q12(15). If it were full of a bunch of 40 and 50 year olds, we would have had a scandal by now.

Right, but now we're in the age of Viagra.

Good point. But since none of the current members have had use for Viagra in the last 10 or more years, I don't think that aspect will kick in for a few more years.

I was looking at this the other day. The last member of the Quorum to be ex'ed was Richard Lyman, whose grandfather, Amasa Lyman was also excommunicated as a member of the 12. Richard Lyman's father, Francis Lyman, was also a member of the 12, but was never excommunicated.

In fact, Francis Lyman was an ardent anti-polygamist. His son, Richard was excommunicated for unlawful cohabitation with a woman in 1943, while in his 70's. The woman, he claimed, was his polygamous wife and had been such since 1925 - seven years after his ordination as an apostle, and nine years after the death of his anti-polygamy father. 1943 was in the middle of Ann Lyman's 5 year tenure as General Relief Society President. Ann was Richard's first-and-still wife.

Amasa's excommunication was for preaching heresy. He preached in both Scotland and Utah denying the necessity and reality of the Atonement. Amasa was posthumously reinstated as a church member, in 1909. Richard didn't have to wait until he died, and was rebaptized in 1954, nine years before his death, but never had his priesthood restored to him.

Richard Lyman's successor in the 12 was Mark E. Petersen.

Good luck catching David Bednar with so much as a hair out of place. The moral gap between him and a guy like John Edwards is laughable.

That's my family. I think Amasa got a little tired of Brigham Young's heavy hand. Family tradition is that he got a raw deal.

Don't forget the member of the quorum of the Seventy that was convicted of child molestation (in the 90's?). Navajo as I recall. Can't remember his name.

This gives the creation of CUF a little more context.

I remember when George Lee was excommunicated in the late 80s. He was a 70.
