  • Pews

Why are LDS pews usually so uncomfortable. When we go to my son's preschool, the pews in their sanctuary are nice and comfortable. The same goes for Episcopal and Presbyterian pews.

I realize that current pews are a step above the cement slabs in the old Tabernacle, but still, can't we at least consider ergonomics and modern technologies.

Today was my first day back at church in five weeks. It felt good, but the pews did not.

I used to be a cameraman at KSL years ago. We would have to be at the Tabernacle at 5:00 on Sunday mornings to set up for Music and The Spoken Word. I can guarantee you that while those pews were hard, they were not so hard as to prevent me from stretching out and sleeping on them during down time after we set up our cameras.

Episcopals and Presbyterians don't have high council Sunday. We don't want their talks drowned out by snores.

I am 6'6" and pews in LDS buildings are not spaced far enough from one another for my comfort. If I don't want to be hunched over, but I want to sit in a pew, I have to go with either the front row, or the row just in front of the overflow.

As to the reason, I suspect it's the usual Mormon cheapness. It's the same thinking that brings cinderblock walls, artificial lighting, few windows etc.

The pews are why people aspire to be the bishop. Then you get to sit in one of those quasi-comfortable movie theater chairs on the stand and you get a nice high-backed chair in the bishop's office.

Maybe that is why in our brand new building there are no comfy chairs up on the stand. The bishopric has to sit on the same uncomfortable benches as the rest of us.

This is also why they fall asleep on the stand. Last week I watched our high council speaker fall asleep. He would probably just admit to resting his eyes, but I could tell he was asleep. I watched him for over three minutes and he had the head-nodding twitches of someone who is asleep while sitting up.

It doesn't help when you have to get up at 4:45 to go to all the meetings prior to the 9:00 block.
