"bishop I need to meet with you tonight". Wish me luck.
Just got one of my least favorite calls...

Hey Art, we made one of those calls once. We needed our Bishop's counsel and support. He came through.
Good luck.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Hey Art, you're not alone. I was set apart as a Bishop this past Sunday. I have no doubt those types of phone calls are in my future; I may need your advice. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

Those calls are never for the purpose of announcing good tidings. It's like the Mike Birbiglia routine about how, "when the doctor says 'We found something in your ....' it's never good news; why can't it ever be something like 'We found something in your bladder.... and IT'S SEASON TICKETS TO THE YANKEES!'"
But those calls also set you up for some really great experiences. Not always, of course, but it's the happy ending ones that make the job so good.

My greatest regret in having gotten divorced is that I am sure had I stayed married I would have made Bishop.
If I had gotten one of those calls, I would have probably said, "oh, not tonight, I have a headache."
In all honesty, I have a great deal of respect for the sacrifice and good those of you who have or have had that position give.

As PAC said, no one ever calls to meet late on a Tuesday night just to let me know they think I'm doing a wonderful job. With that said I sometimes murmur a little on my way to the church, but I'm always glad I go. You never know when it is going to be someone's day for repentence; I would hate to have an individual postpone it because I didn't want to be bothered. I often wonder if I'm really making much of a difference in people's lives (maybe a bishop isn't suppose to and it just my own over-inflated sense of worth that makes me ponder these things) but tonight I felt like I did.
Congrats Bishop McLain. It is funny, I almost started a thread today speculating who would be the next bishop of CUF. My money was on LA, but that is great you will be seasoned veteran soon to help whoever the next one is with the ropes.

I may be small, but I'm slow.
A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

Well, my father was the bishop of the same ward twice, so I know what he went through. And I know that the highs will be very high and the lows will probably be very low. I do know that it will be an experience. If you look at the frequency of my CUF posts, you will see that they have taken a dramatic drop ever since I got the call. That is no coincidence, given my new schedule. I will weigh in however as time permits; this is an addiction that is not easily tamed.Originally posted by happyone View Postcongratulations or condolences, whichever is appropriateTwo things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

No way, we're not letting you off that easy. If anything, you are now required to post at least as much, if not more, than Bishop Vandelay.Originally posted by John McClain View PostWell, my father was the bishop of the same ward twice, so I know what he went through. So, does that make Art the presiding CUF bishop?"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon
