How Sunday School Turned into a CUF Thread

Like many of you, our lesson was on "The Fall" yesterday. We were talking about Adam's line where he says:

The woman thou gavest me, and commanded that she should remain with me, she gave me the fruit of the tree and I did eat

We were talking about whether this was Adam blaming Eve, Adam blaming God, or Adam just putting together the logic for his action (as in, "You commanded me to stay with Eve, since Eve ate, I had to as well")

One of the sisters in our ward (who is a great person, so I feel a little bad about sharing this), was trying say something like this represented the beginning of people shifting responsibility and accountability, so she said:

"This was when men started to to be self-gratified."

Her husband immediately interrupted her and said "self-justified!", but she didn't seem to understand why. Probably because she didn't have to sit through countless interviews while a youth where Bishops used this euphamism.

Obviously, the correct answer is that Adam should have taken the rap for Eve and claimed he took the fruit first; not because Eve thought Adam could fool God, but that's what he should have done to show his support for her.
