Why are LDS so protective of what goes on in the Temple and generally hate when pictures show up on the internet of people in garments yet I see people walking around in a public locker room in their g's all the time. Wouldn't exposing them to just a few be just as wrong as exposing them to millions?

It's been awhile since I was on the locker room scene, but I would never walk around the LR in the Gs. I cover them up as quickly as I can. In fact, I usually keep the boxers in my pants so I can go from butt naked to having pants on in one step. I feel much more comfortable walking around naked than I would in just Gs.Originally posted by RC Vikings View PostWhy are LDS so protective of what goes on in the Temple and generally hate when pictures show up on the internet of people in garments yet I see people walking around in a public locker room in their g's all the time. That said, my reasoning is less about "exposing" the Gs than it is about avoiding weird looks or questions that I would get from people.

Ha! I do exactly the same thing. Plus I like people to think that I am going commando.Originally posted by TheBYUGuy View PostIt's been awhile since I was on the locker room scene, but I would never walk around the LR in the Gs. I wouldn't even put on my garments separately in the Deseret Gym, let alone some Gentile establishment.

I shower and put my Gs in the lockerroom every morning. I don't neccessarily walk around, but I don't rush to quickly cover my nakedness with a fig leaf either. I see the same 3 or 4 Gentile guys most every morning, and have never once been asked about or even noticed a strange look from them.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostI wouldn't even put on my garments separately in the Deseret Gym, let alone some Gentile establishment.

There are only a few things in the temple that we promise not to reveal. The garments are not one of them. So why the big deal?
Well some people want to keep them sacred and not mocked.
Some people are embarrassed.
People misunderstand and think speaking of any temple stuff is forbidden.
Some people are easily offended.
Some people would simply prefer to avoid those prying eyes of others.
I don't think there is a single answer. I, for example didn't have a problem with the Big Love doing their temple scenes. My problem was with their portrayal of the people in the church.

None of you (that I know of) wear women's garments. Unlike men's garments, women's garments look nothing like what normal women wear under their clothes.
I go to the gym in my gym clothes and I leave the gym in my gym clothes. I only go into the locker room to weigh myself or pee. What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I thought this thread would be about Gilbert Arenas from the title. I guess I should have noticed the forum it was in.

It's interesting how many people that play pick up ball at the church wear their Gs while playing. And it's always the guys with the short shorts."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

When I was a kid I went on a date with a girl, and afterward we came back to her place to watch some TV. It was around midnight, and her parents were both in bed. So, we're sitting on the couch, getting cozy, when out into the room walks her father, wearing only his one-piece nylon G's. I was a little embarrassed, but he wasn't the least bit self-conscious. He sat in the Lazy Boy, across from us and started talking. I couldn't make eye contact with him. What was really funny is that he had a pronounced lisp, and started to tell a story about when they had a prowler and he had to go to his closet to get his shotgun. I almost started laughing when he said, "That thorry thack of thyit wath lucky he didn't get a load of buck-thyot in his ath."
After that evening, the girl's father was always fondly referred to as Shotgun Bob."The mind is not a boomerang. If you throw it too far it will not come back." ~ Tom McGuane

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that photos of people in garments seen on the internet are posted there by some who aren't friendly toward the church. It's a way to mock something that many LDS consider sacred.Originally posted by RC Vikings View PostWhy are LDS so protective of what goes on in the Temple and generally hate when pictures show up on the internet of people in garments yet I see people walking around in a public locker room in their g's all the time. As for the locker room, I don't strut around, but most of the people in their with me are folks who are LDS, so it's no big deal."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill
