  • I just dodged a bullet

    Missionaries just called.

Elder: Bro. Surfah hey I was wondering if you'd be able to go on exchanges with us?
    Me: Possibly. What time?
    Elder: Noon.
Me: Today? Like in an hour noon?
    Elder: Yes.
Me: That's kind of short notice and I got some things I need to do. I am not going to be able to help.
    Elder: Oh.
Me: Sorry. Did you need me because you're teaching a female investigator?
Elder: Kind of. We're actually helping a single female move.
Me: Well good luck with that. Bye.

    Whew.

I am pretty sure I would have lost any such blessings moving this unknown person.

Pretty slick of the Elder though to not say they needed help moving someone from the get go.

Big mistake. Single female move = high probably of seeing underwear in boxes, as opposed to garments

The missionaries probably grumbled about the lukewarm members who won't help.

That happened to me. In one area we were asked to attend the singles ward FHE every week, because they were pretty good at inviting investigators to activities. And one week, the whole FHE "lesson" was to help Christina move. And someone thought it would be funny to hand me her underwear dresser drawer.

Unless they honestly didn't know they would need somebody until a scant hour before the move, I think it's absolutely unacceptable to expect people to be free within an hour's notice mid-day on a weekday.

I always found Cristina to be somewhat attractive so moving her underwear drawer would have been a bit awkward for me, as well.

One of the biggest problems with missionaries (I had this too) is that, having never actually lived "real" life, they have no concept of the real life scheduling and other difficulties of the ward members. Maybe older Elders/Sisters are more aware.

Well on my last outing with them, which was an awesome experience, we were talking and they learned I was out of work. So I think that is why they called me.

The same thing happened prior to me leaving on my mission. I was home for 3 months with my call in hand waiting to go into the MTC. I had no job. The Elders asked me for a ride to take them to see the USS Missouri in Astoria one P-day. Bam, after that they called me every day to go out with them. I obliged a few times and finally told them to bugger off, I am serving a 24 month mission myself in 3 months. I don't want to serve a 27 month one.

Were you in the Wizards locker room recently?
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I did get recent missionaries to go on splits with us as a missionary myself. There were times people would sign up for splits or vollunteer that was with notice though. Work from home peple there time is precious too.

There were WArds that it was a royal pain to get splits. I can see why now there are times I can't go to temple or with missionaries myself. TV not good reason but times people have other places to be besides with missionaries.

And moving should be scheduled in advance anyway. We missionaries were utility members cause no one else could. Another thing were asked to babysit in nursery for homemaking. Cheesy service I think.

My wife (also an RM) always is a good sport, so I'll let her do most of the talking. When the missionaries stopped by a few days ago at the doorstep (to set up a time), I offered them some refreshment and words of encouragement as they were tracting out the neighborhood (for the umpteenth time in the last 10 years). When I showed them the door, it struck me how truly boring most of the mission experience is. Poor sods.

                              cheers.
Did you think of it as boring though as a missionary? Because I share the same sentiment looking in the rear view mirror. But as a missionary I can't really recall ever being bored.
