They called at about 5pm needing someone to accompany them to teach a single sister (this rule is dumb BTW - we never had this rule). Typically I would have said no given the short notice. Also, the appointment was at 7pm and the Lakers were tipping off in Chicago at 8. So this really was a sacrifice. But I felt like I could use some good karma and said I would go.
Our appointment is with this sister who has been investigating the church for years. This sister has also been blind since birth. We got to her house and it was dark. One of the Elders commented that she should be home because they just called to confirm. I remarked that she is blind. We all laughed. I am probably going to hell. Anyway, she was home and invited us in. She's an accordionist with an amazing operatic voice. So she played the Chipmunk's Christmas song for us on her accordion and sang along. We stood there in the pitch black. It was pretty rad. We asked if we could turn on a light and the three of us fumbled around the house in the dark with our cell phones as flash lights trying to find a light that worked. Most of her lamps and fixtures didn't even have light bulbs.
It was a pretty good visit. I have met her a few times before. She was married to a blind guy and they used to attend church regularly. She even sang I Believe in Christ in sacrament meeting once. Now that they have divorced she's interested in the Church again. I was amazed at her memory. She recalled a ton about me and my family and asked how my siblings were by name. We had a good lesson about the atonement and mercy and justice needing to be satisfied. Our Elders are pretty decent guys and I'd let them teach my friends. This sister has the BoM in braille (6 volumes). She read in Alma as fast as I could read. It was amazing to watch her fingers fly over the pages. The only problem is that she'd keep reading as we were teaching and then she'd have other questions and comments so teaching was a bit slow and all over the place. The Elders did well though to try and keep things focused.
She's really close to baptism and has a testimony, however her biggest obstacle is her best friend and her family. She depends on them heavily for rides and help. She has a guide dog but is weary of public transportation because of some poor experiences she's had getting around on her own. These friends don't want her to have anything to do with the Church. And she's afraid that when she is baptized they'll abandon her and she'll be without the help she's grown dependent on.
I'm glad I went. It's been awhile since I have gone out with the Elders. The sister offered the closing prayer and asked for some sweet blessings upon my family. She was so excited to learn that Gidget was pregnant along with my two sisters whom she also remembered. This sister is very sweet.
