I think this is one of my favorite posts of all time.Originally posted by nikuman View PostI know right now in Utah HS you are seeing a lot of mary jane (duh), lsd and shrooms. I was never tempted, even once, to have alcohol before I turned 21. In fact, I didn't even have my first drink until 6 months after my birthday. From day one, my friends were LDS, and I spent virtually all of my time with them. Also, my religious upbringing made me fearful (is that the word?) of alcohol.
I'm glad I waited, because at 21 I definitely feel in control of my habits and inclinations. I can see how someone who started earlier may not be able to. Also, waiting as long as I did helped with demystifying what alcohol is. As a youth, it was intimidating and threatening (not to mention expensive). Once I bought it for myself and drank it, there was nothing scary about it, but there also wasn't anything very exciting about it. That's funny. The first time I was ever offered alcohol (and only time in high school) was on a band trip (nerd alert!). The hotel room of the coolest band kids (oxymoron, i know) had the room of hott band girls (another oxymoron--but really, there were a couple hotties in band (both flute players, FTR. Not even kidding.) over for some Zimas. I wasn't cool enough to sleep in the cool room, but I was cool enough to be invited to the "party." When I declined the offering, there was a sense of uneasiness, but I cleared the air letting them know I wasn't going to rat them out.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostI drank Zima. True story.
In all honesty, I probably would have partaken had I been guaranteed a make-out with the hottest chick. I was only a soph, and she was a senior, so this would have been a real coup d'état. Alas, she was already hanging on one of the other guys, so I maintained my virgin lips and virgin liver with a single decision.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

An opportunity lost. I look back on my youth and I still regret more things I didn't do then anything I did do.Originally posted by Donuthole View Post

I have hated drinking with a passion since I was about 10 and figured out that my brother (23) was drinking very heavily since I found his stash. I realized why he was such a ridiculous dick all of the time. Then I thought about my grandparents who had enormous alcohol problems and how they were dicks all of the time. I realized that I did not want to be a dick. So, I decided I would never drink (later I decided I would talk a lot of smack to my frineds and family members that do drink).
Eventually my brother dried out and is an AA leader. I still am a little bit militant about not drinking, I think it is just fine as practiced by billions of people on the earth, but it is pretty silly the way society creates a sense of normal around the binge drinking side of youth.
