Has this verse in the Word of Wisdom ever struck anyone else as odd?

"7 - And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies."

If it's a "drink", doesn't that mean it's meant to be drunk...over the lips, past the gums, watch out belly, here it comes?

Why the use of the word "drink"?

    Why not "spirits" or "alcohol"?

It's always just struck me as a bit funny in terms of the verbiage.

You think the use of "drink" is stranger than the advice that we use the drink to wash our bodies? Is anyone here bathing in beer?
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

why is it always about the beer with you mormons? Some kind of complex?

ALcohol is a disinfectant. If you had watched more surgeries in old western films you would know this.

I know women that swear by beer as a "wash" for their hair. Supposedly, it makes it silkier or something.

I suppose Ute fans are really only helping BYU fans live the Word of Wisdom when they bathe them in beer.

Never really thought about that and it certainly wasn't the reason I posted this, but an interesting thought nonetheless.

Every BYU fan that has ever been to RES. Maybe they should read D&C before they go to the game next year.

Really, this was not where I wanted this thread to go.

Can we leave the smack in the Stadium?

You should have posted this in The Foyer II if you didn't want any smack.

I've had a beer hair-wash before. It does make your hair soft.

I don't think that beer is a "strong drink", though. It refers to liquor. I think D&C 89 approves of beer as a "mild drink" (v. 17), although contemporary LDS leadership has interpreted it differently since the 1920s and the heyday of the temperance movement.

I recently was told about a person who joined the church in the early 70s and brought a keg to his first ward picnic that summer. He was astounded that people would think a barley drink was against the WoW since it said specifically that "All grain is good for the food of man.."

I've seen the minutes of the 12 when they were discussing the beer/no beer bit. Available in a publication from the U - I forget the one, but I'm sure one of you will find the answer in a thread here somewhere, as I've brought it up before.

I personally agree with the POV that beer is not a strong drink within the original meaning of the WoW.

Alcohol as a cleansing agent, like peroxide on wounds.

I think Utah beer qualifies as a mild drink.

I understand. I'm not an idiot. My chuckle is the use of the word "drinks" with the qualifier that they are "not for the belly."

I understand that alcohol is a disinfectant, cleansing agent, etc.
