  • LDS Church reportedly set to reach out to gay community

    http://www.abc4.com/content/news/top...medium=twitter
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Numerous sources are now telling ABC 4 that the LDS Church is poised to extend an olive branch of sorts to the gay community.

These sources say the Church is expected to - both through spoken and written statements - to offer its support for proposed Salt Lake City ordinances extending protection to gays in the areas of employment and housing.

Reportedly, the Church has been in quiet discussion with members of Utah's gay community.

This announcement from the Church is expected sooner rather then later.

It is being described to ABC 4 as being very significant.

We will bring you further details in this major story as it develops.

This is great news. Although it is a little troublesome that it is "good news" that a church will officially announce its support for equal protection for other human beings.

    Oh, well. Baby steps.

PS I think it is sexy that Church leaders are secretly meeting with the gay community.

Had the church previously been against gay housing and employment issues?

I wonder how many gays the Church employs.

Probably not (officially), but the Church is a big player in state politics, even if it claims it isn't. Putting its weight behind these measures is a nice show of support, I would think. I don't know how it will be received, though.

if you go back far enough, I am sure most churches were at one point.

Per the twitter, I don't think the Church would have had to be against employment and housing in the past. The news is that the Church is now willing to publicly show support for the codification of gay rights ordinances at the city level. That is a big step, but doesn't necessarily require the Church to have previously held an opposing stance on the issue....just that prior to this, the Church had remained silent one way or the other with regards to employment and housing.

Again, though, it is weird that this is "news." This is like waiting until the late 70s to announce public support for blacks.............

Based on a few personal conversations I have had with Utah legislators, I can assure you that some of them feel that fighting against gay rights on all fronts is a form of following the prophet.

Well, it guess it depends on what they mean by housing and employment issues. What I find very interesting is how so many members in the Prop 8 debate were saying they were fine with civil unions, while the Church has consistently opposed these. I wonder if it's reversing this position.

Regardless of what Utah legislators themselves might think, they aren't the church.
