    Divorced GAs

How many divorced GAs have we had over the years? Any divorced prophets or apostles since Brigham Young? Are divorced people more likely to be excluded from leadership positions simply because they have divorced or because of correlation with other issues?

Grapevine might be best suited to answer this question.

I just read the divorce documents from BY's 17th wife on the New York Times web site. There were some pretty harsh accusations.

Go to the NY Times web site and enter this search: brigham young divorce

Then click all results since 1851. It'll be the first document that appears.

She is alleging that BY was cruel to her, used offensive language toward her, and left her to fend for herself with her two young children and sickly mother on a small farm without any other support. She said that BY would only visit her briefly and rarely for a few minutes to monitor progress on the farm.

This post isn't getting enough cedit. It's entertaining beginning to end. The middle paragraph is classic, hilarious.

Compton's book spent a lot of time talking about that wife I believe.

I don't know of any recent General Authorities that have been divorced. Ann Eliza Young eventually became an apostate. Marlin Jensen said divorces in polygamous relationships were easy to come by.

I read that in a talk he gave on that subject. Some of the polygamous leaders did divorce subsequent wives. Wilford Woodruff did. Joseph F Smith and his first wife who was his first cousin unable to have children divorced him. the others I am sure remained married. Since polygamy has been illegal I don't think there has been a General Authority that has been divorced.

And Todd Compton is not someone I put a lot of stock in. He is 100 percent in line with the prophet as long as the prophet agrees with him. When the prophet doesn't he goes out of his way to prove prophet wrong.

Grapevine never fails. Thanks. Once again, you are encyclopedic. I had no idea about Joseph F. Smith. I'd like to get my hands on those divorce papers as well.

Is that some sort of euphemism?

                        Thanks scottie.

According to this, Brigham Young was about 67 when they married. She was 25, with two kids from a previous marriage.

My stake president has a policy that divorced men cannot serve in bishoprics. It's his own policy, not the church's. I wouldn't be surprised if others had a similar approach.

I have only ever known one divorced person to serve in a bishopric.
