The Book of Mormon: A Very Short Introduction

I'm bumping this because I finally downloaded "By the Hand of Mormon" to my Kindle and started reading it on the plane home last night (I didn't want to think about football for some reason - ). I am really enjoying it, especially the way Givens puts the BoM into historical perspective. I hadn't heard about the "Short Introduction" so I am going to get that one too.

Another recent scholarly book on the Book of Mormon is Grant Hardy's (I believe Statman is connected to Hardy through marriage) Understanding the Book of Mormon. This is also published by Oxford University Press and is available for your kindle. It provides a very nice interpretive approach to the Book of Mormon and yields some nice insights. Like all books of this type not everything will resonate with the reader but when it does it is really breathtaking.

I see it as nicely building on Givens' introductory contributions. It is good to see good work like this happening.

I'll have to order this, pelagius. I actually just finished reviewing Oxford's A Very Short Introduction to Postcolonialism for an Afro-Hispanic Literature class I'm teaching next Fall, and I'm a fan of the series. I didn't know they had a BofM one.

I use the Very Short Introduction to Fascism for a course I teach. The series is excellent. I wish high schools would use them more often.

I am a fan of the series as well. Really nice way to get some exposure to a new subject. I find that they are usually very readable.

In addition to Givens' intro to the Book of Mormon, Bushman wrote the intro to Mormonism for the very short intro series a few years ago. That one is nice as well. The Mormonism class taught here at Dartmouth assigns Bushman's intro as reading (I was pleased to see that).
