At the bottom of this paper is the First Presidency message about the Do's and the Dont's of the talk.
They have been doing this for well over 2 years now.
Do I think it was handled right? Probably not.
But let's not hang the Bishopric. I can pretty much guarantee that the kid got the paper. Whether he read it or not is on him.
I reread the original post and realized I read it wrong the first time. For some reason I thought the father was asked to sit down before the boy began to speak (I assumed the easel would have been set up in advance). I didn't realize the counselor actually got up during the talk. I still have empathy for the bishop trying to follow the prophet's counsel, but more strongly agree with those who say it was handled poorly.

Reason: Too whiney
I agree that the whole thing probably could have been handled with more tact and had I sat on the stand I am sure I would have let it go, thanked the boy and his father for the talk, and made it a point of emphasis the next time he or any one else was asked to speak that I go over the things which Tick says their bishopric already does (which I think is great).
