  • Hummus

We bought new food processor a few months ago and we have become big fans of homemade hummus. We tinkered with recipes until we came up with a blend we really like. I prefer to eat it with white corn tortilla chips.

Anyone have recommendations on variations? We have tried sun-dried tomato and olive. I would like to try roasted pepper, but I am not sure what kind to buy or where to buy it.

    This is our favorite recipe:

    1 can chickpeas, drained
    1/4 C water
    1 teaspoon crushed garlic
    2 T tahini
    2 T lemon juice
    1/2 t ground cumin
    1/2 t salt
    Fresh ground pepper
    1/4 C olive oil

Put all of the ingredients except for the olive oil into the food processor. Blend for 1-2 minutes. While blending, slowly add the olive oil.

Last night I went somewhere that I don't want to discuss publicly. Some of you may know where I went.

Anyway, there was some homemade hummus that was delish. The only real twist was that the person tossed in some crushed chile de arbol. The spice made it delish. Not sure why everyone in SoCal always wants to add chili or avocado to everything, but most of the time it winds up tasting pretty good.
      Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I love hummus. I too eat it on white corn tortilla chips (I thought I was weird for this), carrot sticks, wheat thins, my finger....

We're getting a new food processor for Christmas. Thanks for the recipe.

          Very cool idea.

Nice. I love the hummus. My recipe is similar to yours, though I don't use olive oil except as a garnish along with paprika. I prefer it straight up and don't add a lot of extra stuff. If you like roasted red pepper, just make your own. It's quick and easy and always tastes better than the overpiced jar you'll find at Smith's that's been sitting there for years. I use an approximation of this recipe :

One variation on hummus that I do like is to use roasted garlic and add four or five cloves.

I like mine with pita warmed directly on the burner or grilled flatbread.

Roast my own peppers on the grill? Sounds delicious, but I am not so sure about the "quick and easy" part. I like to whip up a batch of hummus in 5-10 minutes when we are craving a quick snack.

Yes, it is great straight up, although I thought the sun-dried tomatoes were nice. Didn't overwhelm the flavor, but made it a bit more interesting.

I like creamy hummus. Hence the olive oil. But I sometimes use less than the 1/4 C listed.

I love to use hummus on a pita sandwich or tortilla wrap. Grill some chicken using montreal chicken seasoning or just pepper and garlic salt, cut into strips. Put the chicken on a warm pita, you can use the pocket part of the pita, wrap it or use a tortilla like a wrap. Top with hummus, sour cream or greek yogurt, olives, cucumber and feta. This sandwich is also terrific if you fry chicken using a falafel mix as your breading.

Plus, hummus always tastes better the next day after the flavors have married. Do it on a Saturday night and your Sunday afternoon meal will be incredible.

                      That sounds very good.

Sheez...put me to shame. That sounds good, though.

                        I'm curious--what's your PBJ recipe?

Give that one a try. If you like hummus, you'll like that sandwich.

It's funny, but we have some real PBJ connoisseurs here. Babs won't touch the big brand stuff, but she consumes more peanut butter than a broke missionary with two weeks to go until payday.

I tried a PB that's made by a company in NYC that also runs a little restaurant. It was really good, kind of expensive, and probably not good for you. I also remember there were a bunch of different flavors. Any ideas on what the brand was?
