  • Nikuman's recovery shake

Okay, the ingredients on this vary, depending on my mood and how much I had for dinner; I approximate the calories and make it fit daily intake. Also, I should warn you that I have that blender from the Will It Blend? guy that blends up rakes and stuff (after owning one, I'm pretty sure all those videos are legit).

Anyway, here's what I blend up right after my runs (all measurements approximate):

    1 banana
    1 cup of grapes
    1 cup fresh raw spinach
    2 tsp. flaxseed
    3/4 cup frozen strawberries
    1 T peanut butter
    1T honey
    2 scoops protein powder
    1 1/2 cups ice

I vary it depending on what kind of fruit I have in the house (sometimes I have blueberries or mango or pineapple) and sometimes I add other stuff like plain yogurt or even oatmeal. If I am getting close to my calorie limit for the day I drop out the peanut butter and honey. It makes enough for two large glasses (and I drink both). Tasty (you can't taste the spinach), fresh and natural.

Heavens no! Not even half of that. But it was expensive. I seriously do think I could blend a rake if I wanted to, though.

Not really. At least I haven't noticed anything different (other than being regular). But my diet is really fruit heavy, so I think I've adjusted.

Yeah, that's about right. I estimate it as follows:

              Banana - 80 calories
              Grapes - 80
              Strawberries - 80
              Spinach - 40
              Flaxseed - 60
              PB - 90
              Protein Powder - 140
              Honey - 100

So you're looking at something in the order of 600 calories. Like I said, sometimes I'll drop out the PB and honey if I have some reason to cut back on the calories. But the calorie sources are all pretty dang good there - even your fat (PB and flaxseed) is from good sources.

Yes - it started off as throwing whatever healthy stuff I could in a blender and seeing if I could stomach it. Turns out you absolutely cannot taste the spinach. It comes out looking kind of icky, but actually tastes quite good. I have been using the Costco EAS protein powder (both chocolate and vanilla, as the mood strikes) and the flavor is always good. PB and strawberries have strong flavors that dominate the spinach, flaxseed, etc.

I actually love spinach. Do you ever drink those green juice drinks? I love those. Ton of calories, though.

Do you freeze the banana in chunks before blending?

I have in the past. In fact, that was how I got most of my veggies in Japan.

Nope. Fresh bananas. The riper, the better. I have used stuff too ripe for banana bread.

well, there's more than one brand, but naked is good.
