    Railroad Barbecue-Dripping Springs, TX

With a name like this, in a town called dripping springs, in the Texas Hill Country, I figured this place had to be good. When I saw a couple of cops walking out, I knew I'd found the place.

Turns out it was pretty mediocre. I got the 2-meat combo (chicken and brisket). The 1/2 chicken was moist, well seasoned, with a good smoke flavor. The brisket was mediocre in every sense of the word. It was not dry, but it was not flavorful either. A bit of a disappointment for this part of Texas. I didn't finish the sides (beans and potato salad).

There's a joint 1/2 mile down 290 called Pig Pen that is supposed to be solid. Next time business takes me to Austin, I'll return and report.

Podnah's in Portland is excellent. We had a large group and most ordered different items. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and chicken were all delicious. Beans and cornbread were good also.

Just hit up Two Bros BBQ Market here in San Antonio. It usually shows up on all the best BBQ lists for the area. Service was grumpy and the place was a bit dirty, but meats were good, creamed corn was good. Sauces were so so, but that's ok (they had a tangy, a mustardy which I liked best and a Shiner molasses).

Gonna check out the other big one in SA (Big Bib) at some point.

If you ever head up to San Marcos, I just ate at Hays County BBQ. Their brisket was amazing. I'm not usually a huge fan of the point, but I got a nice piece of point meat that was perfection. Great bark, very moist, and well rendered. I also snagged some smoked turkey, which was good as far as smoked turkey goes, but didn't stand a chance Next to the brisket. They had two sauces. One was Rudy's sause. The other was a tangy mustard sauce. Not a fan of the mustard sauce, but honestly, not needed.

Edit: just realized this was LiveCoug's recommendation above. Solid choice.

Franklin BBQ burned to the ground last night.

Edit: just lost a pit. Restaurant okay.
