    We had a thread on this at some point in the past. There simply is no equivalent to "guy" which is always acceptable. Almost everything used to refer to a female has a connotation. Woman, I agree, has the softest (though to me it implies age).

            But she could, and would most likely call him a "guy." I can't imagine any female referring to someone they had been dating as "I've been going out with this man." It sounds like she's going out with a stranger.
