My cheeses of the week, purchased at Harmon's today:

      A Camembert - $19/lb, pretty pricey
      ImageUploadedByTapatalk1383704410.613224.jpg

A Mediterranean Herb Gouda from Holland - $16/lb
      ImageUploadedByTapatalk1383704459.069729.jpg

The Camembert tasted pretty darn similar to a regular Brie. I really couldn't tell much difference although I don't have the most discriminating of palates. For the price difference I'll just stick with a Brie next time. The herbed Gouda was very good. It reminded me of the herbed olives you get at the deli. I could taste oregano and thyme and basil.

        My cheeses of the week:

A "La Baguette" from Breton which is a soft cheese similar to Brie. $13.50/lb
        ImageUploadedByTapatalk1384222318.237529.jpg

A white stilton with cranberries made in the UK specifically for export $13.70/lb
        ImageUploadedByTapatalk1384222476.848142.jpg

These cheeses are mass produced so they're cheaper per pound. Haven't tried them yet. I'll post an update later.

Vacherin Mont d'or is now available online. I found some at Murray's Cheese in NYC: http://www.murrayscheese.com

          It comes in a 12 oz size that costs $40 + $20 shipping. That's $80/lb!

Still, I'm going to try it once just to say that I have.

I forgot to update on the La Baguette and the stilton. The La Baguette cheese said "mild and creamy" on the wrapper and it was certainly mild. Far too mild for my taste. Cream cheese has more flavor. It was not runny at room temperature but definitely spreadable like soft cream cheese. The rind didn't have much of a flavor either and was relatively thick and dry compared to a brie. If you like it mild, and I mean very mild, pick one of these up. Otherwise avoid it and just stick with a brie or camembert.

The stilton was pretty good. This was the first time I had ever tried a stilton. The texture and consistency was crumbly like blue cheese but the flavor was more mild than blue. The cranberries were nice - not too sweet. This is a nice dessert cheese. I would get this one again.

I forgot to mention that both of these were purchased at Sam's Club, which makes sense because they're both mass-market cheeses.

Next time you are at Costco, pick up a wedge of cambozola. It is great.

Cambozola has a relatively short history as cheeses go. It was originally invented in the early 1900's, and since 1970 has been made by huge German cheesemaker Champignon. It's a soft-ripened triple-cream cheese made with the same Penicillin roqueforti mold also used in Gorgonzola, the taste profile is very complex: imagine a good Italian Gorgonzola with the sharp edges filed off, combined with a decent triple-cream Brie. The nutty characteristics of Brie are there, and the mild "mushroomy" flavor of the rind, but they're well-balanced with the blue.

i'm not really a fan of anything but the mildest cheese, but the cranberry cinnamon goat cheese at costco is dope.

If you recall my mom married Hal late in life. His daughter Julie and her husband Tony own a small cheese company in Wisconsin. I've never met them, but have sampled some of their "World Champion" bleu cheese products, and they are the best I've ever had. Melt in your mouth delicious.

                    Hooks Cheese Company

Their bleu cheese product "Little Boy Bleu" won 1st place in America, and 3rd place Internationally.

Moving the conversation over here in order to not distract from the conversation of superpowers.

I think I was the only one that mentioned Kraft singles and Velvetta. The main reason those came up was because Kraft was the original inventor of American cheese slices.

I would be mildly interested in brands of American cheese that are the best. Lightly perusing the internet suggests that Kraft singles are one of the top brands which surprises me and I’m not sure I believe it.

What are the go to American cheese brands?

I would try it. This line from the website made me laugh.

As fall comes to the Rogue Valley, cooler temperatures and wet weather bring renewed growth to the pastures. This is when our cow’s milk is at its best – and it’s only during these months that we make our limited edition, seasonal Rogue River Blue – a cheese named World Champion at the 2019/20 World Cheese Awards. After 9 to 11 months of careful tending in our aging caves, our team hand-wraps each wheel in organic, biodynamic Syrah grape leaves that have soaked in pear spirits. On the Autumnal Equinox each year, we celebrate the release of the year’s new Rogue River Blue Cheese.
Yes, carry it from the aging caves, when the sun crosses the celestial equator and the Autumnal Equinox has arrived, and offer up this rotting milk of the cow to the God of the Harvest!
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I like the bags of shredded Tillamook cheese from Costco. Also Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Cache Valley cheese slices are also very delicious.

I would love to try that. My all-time favorite cheese is Saint Agur double cream blue. Made in france and a little pricey but the flavor and texture are incredible. Locally you can get it at Harmons.
