  • Eateries in Bend, OR

Since I'm spending 4 months here on a project I thought I'd post my observations on the different places I've eaten. I'll update this post over time. Leaving out chains for obvious reasons.

Feel free to post suggestions as well.

    The Good

    High Tides Seafood Grill.
Excellent. I have been there 3 times and they never missed. The owner is the Chef and does a great job. I normally try not to repeat too much so I can hit as many different places as possible so the fact that I have been three times says something.

    Brother Jon's Alehouse.
Had some pretty good Fish and Chips here. It is almost a shame I am not a beer drinker in this town. They have 21 microbreweries here.

    Baltazar's Mexican Seafood.
Another excellent choice. I will be back at some point I'm sure. Baltazar himself serves you and is a super nice guy.

Tumalo Feed Company.A great suggestion from NorthwestCoug, which is good because it is off the beaten path a bit. A bit of a dumpy place but the steak was fantastic. The sides were just so-so but I went for the steak so it's all good.

    Jake's Diner
Great greasy spoon for breakfast. Other meals look good.

    ToGo's
Chain sandwich shop which I guess is all over the West Coast but a big step above Subway and the like.

    El Rodeo
Great Mexican food. This was one of Northwestcoug's suggestions and I should have gone sooner. I had an enchilada and tamale combo plate. Really enjoyed it and I will be back.

The Bad (okay really just mediocre but that doesn't really fit the meme).

    Baldy's BBQ.
Meh. Granted my standards for BBQ are pretty high but I won't be back.

    Caldera Grill.
Another greasy spoon downtown. It was fine but I won't be back.

    Pine Tavern
The soup I had was great (though I can't remember what it was called) but the Prime Rib was so-so.

    Greg's Grill
Meh. Can't even remember what I had.

    Anthony's (technically a chain)
For some reason I thought I had been here in Seattle and it was good. Maybe it was just a bad night but I was not that impressed.

    The Ugly

    Blacksmith Steakhouse
This is supposedly a great high end place in downtown Bend. The prices reflected that. I should have known when I got there one evening and there were only two other tables with people at them.

The second bad sign was it was a "steakhouse" with only two steaks on the menu. A NY Strip or a FlatIron. I chose the Strip. It was awful.

      Cibellie's pizza is good

Three Creeks in Sisters, grab yourself a Hoodoo Voodoo IPA.

Did you have the Rocky Mountain oysters at Tumalo?

When I'm in Bend and it's lunchtime, I like to stop at the Szechuan Restaurant at 1600 NE 3rd St. Sure it's a little Chinese place at the end of a mini mall, but the food is actually good, and the prices are $5.95 for more food than you should eat.

One of the best meals I've ever had was the Beef Stroganoff at The Crossings Restaurant at the River Place Hotel. That was 20 years ago, I'd be interested if it was still good.

No I tend to pass on foods like testicles.

I did have a sandwich at Whole Foods called the Hoodoo though. So you've got that going for you.

20 years ago? You can still remember meals you ate when you were like ten years old?

OK.... I got caught lying. It was the summer of 1997. A friend and I happend to be in Bend at the same time, and we got together for some dinner. I did tell my wife about it, and the fact that I remember everything about that evening, is no reflection on how much fun it was to have a romantic dinner for two on the banks of the Deschutes River on a perfect summers evening.

Glad you liked Tumalo Feed Company. I haven't been disappointed there yet.
If you go to Brother Jon's again, get one of their sandwiches. I like a lot of them there.
I actually haven't been to High Tides. No one else in my family likes seafood, so maybe I'll have to go with you.

Absolutely agree on the 'Bad' ones. I've never been that impressed with Baldy's. Pine Tavern used to be good, but it's slowly deteriorating. And you're about the umpteenth person I've heard say that Greg's Grill is mediocre, so I haven't gone there.

Yep. Anytime we go skiing we try to hit Three Sisters on the way back (thanks Hoodoo for the coupon!). Good all-around food and drinks.

The best meal I've had in Bend was at Deschutes Brewery. Great Ribs. Give it a go.

El Rodeo makes the good list. Went there tonight at Northwestcoug's suggestion Enchilada and tamale plate was great.
