    Kansas City Dining

I will be in KC next week. Any suggestions on restaurants? Especially interested in KC BBQ.

    TIA

I have been to Arthur Bryant's. The line was long but it was really good. The only thing that I thought was bizarre was that they pile it all on a bunch of plain white Wonder bread. A bit of a letdown when everything else about the meal is so detailed.

But it was definitely delish. I guess it is an institution of some sorts in KC. I have no idea if locals consider it genuine, but as I said, it was really crowded both times I have been there.

I was in KC last summer and tried to hit up 39th Street Mama's because I saw it on Diners Drive Ins and Dives, but the line was super-long so I gave it a pass. It's supposed to be a down home restaurant with a little bit of everything.

I just got a job offer in KC. I'm going to be going out there in the next few weeks to check things out. I'm interested in your restaurant feedback.

There's an upscale barbecue joint behind the train station -- a KC classic, whose name escapes me. Some of the best ribs I've ever had.

A true Californian, no doubt. Don't you know ALL true bbq comes on wonder bread? Sheesh.

Jeff - check out the link above to my post on cougarboard. My favorite of all the KC bbq spots is Oklahoma Joe's. However, be warned, Oklahoma Joe's is inside an operating gas station/convenience store, connected to a liquor store, and across the street from check-cashing and tatoo establishments. On the other hand, the eating area inside the joint is actually pretty nice compared to what you might expect looking at the outside, and at lunch time in the middle of the week the line out the door will be equal parts working man in steel-toed boots and shirt-and-tie professional.

And, yes, your ribs will come on a delicate bed of wonder bread - how else are you going to sop up the greasy remains after you polish off the last of the meat?

CJF - I love Kansas City, and if you like bbq and sports, you probably will too. I grew up there from the age of 7 to 16 and lived there again for 3 years after college. Let me know if you have any questions about the area.

Looks fun. I don't mind dives.

Yes, I copied your detailed post on CB to my laptop. That is exactly what I was looking for. I will be there for five days so I should be able to try multiple spots. Thanks!

Jeff, on the outskirts of Kansas City just off I-70 there is an Applebees. It is so yum! If you get there between 5-7 p.m. you get half off appetizers! You don't even need to order a meal and you can gorge yourself on boneless buffalo wings, potato skins, mozz sticks, and veggie patch pizza. Super good!

Cool. I'll take you up on that. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions if I do make the jump. I'm trying to hold off for at least 6 months but I do want to go out and see the area and meet my potential team and look for an area to live.

Nothing. I'm here and for the most part enjoying the job. Over the last month I've received a job offer several times. I have mostly ignored the opportunity, but they've become more and more aggressive in the offer. I don't want to jump any earlier than 1 year and in 1 year my home lease is up. The EVP understands this but has offered to buy out my lease. So I'll go out and visit the complex, meet my potential team, and discuss the opportunities with them. We'll see what happens. I'm not in a hurry to jump. I just got here.
