  • Shrek Shakes

Wasn't sure if this belonged here or They Gym but it does involve a recipe so I put it here. These are the shakes my wife makes us all for breakfast every day ... kids love them and it's a great way to get veggies in.

DT and Tick are both fans as well and Tick has been bugging me for the recipe so here it is.

    6-8 oz Chocolate Almond Milk
    2-4 oz Vanilla Almond Milk
    1 scoop Whey Protein
1 spoonful Peanut Butter (this is optional ... I hate PB in drinks so I leave it out)
    1 frozen banana
Kale and Spinach (handful or so of each .. maybe a cup?)
    ice if desired

EDIT: the almond milk is because we have a lactose-intolerant kid ... I imagine you could use skim milk / chocolate milk too.

You'll see why they are called Shrek shakes when you make one. They are the same color. They blow the mind though because all you taste are chocolate and a bit of banana.

I was so excited to make these for my kids. They are VERY picky and I thought this would be a good way to get some extra veggies. I omitted the Kale and just used spinach.

They saw the green color and automatically hated them. Then they said they dont like banana. Anyways, I was disappointed. I thought they were going to be a hit. Maybe I oversold them, I dont know. All I know is I think they are delish!

We make these (or similar) for the kids all the time. You really have to use the Costco brand protein--the other kinds just don't taste as good. Also, I don't like kale--I think it has a weird aftertaste. And we just use normal milk.

But yes, they're green. You have to sell it, but once you do, it's a great way to get kids to eat veggies.

Other variations: vanilla protein mix with the frozen mixed berries at Costco. That will take away the green color. (for the peanut butter version, we use the chocolate protein mix).

We should make a smoothie thread.

Eating a cup of spinach with chocolate milk, peanut butter and bananas is a great way to get kids to eat "veggies?"

        No wonder America is overweight.

kids love ranch dressing, that is another great way to get them to eat veggies

Yes, I'm sure green smoothies are the reason America is overweight.

Syntha 6 is great stuff. I wish they sold it at Costco.

I have no problem with the shake itself.

But the message was puzzling. The recipe laid out isn't a "great way" to eat veggies at all. In fact, barely any veggies are being consumed at all and the vitamin A that you get from the spinach can be obtained throughout the day fairly easily anyway.

Also, why are children eating a scoop of protein powder? Why do little kids need that?

This recipe reminds me of people that end their workout with a smoothie from jamba juice.

There are some veggie juicers at the office that spend about 45 minutes every morning pulverizing around 8 vegetables and some fruit (almost always oranges for some reason) and making smoothies that look disgusting and smell pretty good. That is what I was expecting to see here.

I was expecting the same and that is my breakfast. 6 kale leaves, 1 cucumber, 4 celery stalks, 2 green apples, 1/2 lemon, 1 piece ginger. It is pretty good!

They're eating a cup of spinach, a banana, and a glass of milk, sometimes a cup of berries. How is that unhealthy?

You're right that the whey protein is an expensive way to get protein, but a scoop is about 50 cents and it makes it taste better and be more filling. I'm sure there is a cheaper way to do that--let me know if you have an idea.

The peanut butter is optional and there are much much worse things.

All in all, a pretty good meal, and probably better than 90% of what kids eat.

Maybe I'm being unclear. I don't think it is a bad shake at all (although again not sure why children need scoops of protein unless your 7 year old is lifting). I was simply focusing on the notion that the shake recipe in question is a great way to eat veggies. the recipe contains almost no veggies. My reference to American obesity is a reference to that mindset: consume a trace amount of something good and surround it with sweeter caloric stuff.

I love all of the things listed in that shake and would drink it myself. But I'm not going to follow that recipe and tell myself that I'm eating my veggies. I'm just having a yummy shake made of sweet stuff. No problem.

Guess we should go back to fruit loops.

I used to make my kids a "Green Day" smoothie:

                            Vanilla yogurt
                            frozen pineapple
                            spinach
                            milk

It was tasty, sort of like a pineapple julius. And no, I don't think it was a bad way to sneak in a vegetable they wouldn't eat alone or even with ranch dressing (which I don't think is in any way better for kids than yogurt or pineapple).

The smoothie was a pretty shade of green. I imagine the brown and green of the spinach and chocolate mixture would not be as appealing.
