  • Organic food not healthier

...based on new study from Stanford:

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...c-food-is.html

Eating organic fruits and vegetables can lower exposure to pesticides, including for children — but the amount measured from conventionally grown produce was within safety limits, the researchers reported Monday.
Nor did the organic foods prove more nutritious.
"I was absolutely surprised," said Dr. Dena Bravata, a senior research affiliate at Stanford and long-time internist who began the analysis because so many of her patients asked if they should switch.
"There are many reasons why someone might choose organic foods over conventional foods," from environmental concerns to taste preferences, Bravata stressed. But when it comes to individual health, "there isn't much difference."
Think of all the money wasted each year on organic foods. Yowza, what a great scam.

I was never suckered. I feel sorry for those that fell for the organic movement.

I also don't care if my chickens were free range.

I've always been amused by the "antibiotic free" meat and poultry.

You'll give antibiotics to your kids, but not your cows?

I'll still buy the brown organic eggs at Costco, I think they taste better. That's the only organic food I buy.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Ugh. This shit *totally* happens in Portland. I think that's why I didn't find the show Portlandia very funny after awhile--it's all the annoying stuff about Portland compressed into 20 minutes, minus all the awesome. That and, "Can I have the meatless taco with vegan soy cheese? Oh, and I only eat soy cheese made from ethically treated soybeans. You only use gluten-free flour tortillas, right?" AHHHHHHHH! It's not shocking to me that Naomi Pomeroy of Beast in PDX has "Substitutions politely declined" printed on her menus.

Hey, not everyone in PDX is picky about what they eat!

Think of all the money wasted each year on organic foods. Yowza, what a great scam.
Disclaimer: I buy organic when I have a choice. I buy lots of fruit and veggies so I am not a novice.

Without actually clicking on the link, I have a few quibbles:

                    A. What are "safe levels" and why are we sure they are safe? At an equal price point, who doesn't choose organic for that reason alone?

                    B. I personally think organic tastes better by a lot, but I speculate the reasons have very little to do with the pesticides.

                    C. I have in the past suffered severe allergic reactions to pesticides on tomatoes. My fault for not washing them first, I know.

                    D. Finally, what is the non-consumption based impact of pesticides and herbicides? I don't know the answer and I would like to know.

Far too many variables here to call anything a scam in my view, although I am the one getting scammed if it is all horseshit, as I disclosed above. However, I would prefer to have all sorts of fruits and veggies with whatever chemicals necessary if this unhealthy lardass nation will eat them. I'll continue to spent something like .001% of my income eating organic as opposed to not, but as long as you're eating something reasonable I won't scream at you.

We buy ours from a neighbor. They are MUCH better than the grocery store eggs.

My BIL sells product in Whole Foods across the country. Listening to him talk about the whole organic and healthy choice food industry is pretty funny. It's about 90% marketing - and very successful. Basically, there is a certain segment of the population that will buy whatever you want them to if you just convince them they are doing something better/more noble than what everyone else is doing.

                        Enjoy the organic bananas.

Why? This I want to know.

(I completely agree stuff like that tastes better, having grown up eating eggs, meats, milk and produce from my own farm, and loving the food we get from our own garden the very most on a taste basis. We had the most bitchin' tomatoes and basil this spring/summer).

You don't think the freshness factor could have accounted for the perception in taste?

I saw a special on TV a few years ago where they did a series of blind taste tests and showed that organic food does not taste better. In fact, it often has inferior taste. Here is a similar study:

According to a new study by Jenny Wan-chen Lee, a graduate student at Cornell University’s Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, the halo effect extends to food too: if people are told a food is “organic,” they’re also biased to believe it’s more nutritious and better tasting.
Lee’s study involved 144 people, recruited at a local mall for a taste test: Lee presented shoppers with chocolate sandwich cookies, plain yogurt and potato chips, each in two varieties — “conventional” or “organic.” In reality, there was no difference between the food pairs; everything was organic.
Participants used a nine-point scale to rate various attributes of each food, including overall taste and estimated fat, fiber and calorie content. Tasters also estimated the price of each food.
Uniformly, the participants reported preferring the taste of the foods labeled “organic,” and believed them to be lower in fat, higher in fiber and lower in calories than the conventional alternatives. They also judged the organic foods to be higher in price.

Like I said - about 90% marketing. And very successful.

That being said, there is a difference between grocery store eggs and farm fresh eggs. Not sure if it is the freshness or inferior feed for mass-producing chickens.

The eggs we eat at home are noticeably richer with darker yolks. The other day we ate breakfast at a diner, and I was a little grossed out at how watery and pale the eggs were.
