  • Finca (Pago's sister restaurant)

This place just opened about a week and a half ago across the street from Liberty Heights Fresh on 11th East in SLC. The cuisine is Spanish, tapas style, and, in the tradition of Pago is from mostly local and farm fresh ingredients.

We went for my wife's birthday with another couple and between the four of us tried about a dozen different dishes. Some standouts were an empanada with chorizo and egg (comically small, almost bite-sized, but delicious,) a carne de asador skewer with pork belly and onion (like big chunks of the best bacon you've ever tasted) some chorizo-stuffed calamari, fresh churros with caramel sauce and a biscotti topped with an avocado mousse and bits of mango.

The place has a really fun atmosphere and while right now they only take reservations for groups of eight or more, we only waited about 20-30 minutes when we arrived at 6:15 on a Saturday. However, by the time we left a couple hours later, the place was jam-packed.

Anyone else tried this place yet?
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I don't know tapas very well, but we very much enjoyed a place over by the ballpark called Meditrina. Was that it?

Looks like the good folks at Cafe Martine were expecting huge dinner crowds thanks to CCC. Worked for the first weekend and then slowed down again. He can't understand why.

We finally made it Finca last night. We enjoyed the experience.

          Our tapas selection:
          1. Local artisan cheese plate, quince paste, 5 types of cheese, smoked candied almonds, glazed cherries, and grapes. I took a pic after we had pounded much of the cheese.

          2. smoked potatoes with garlic aioli
          3. traditional Spanish tortilla
          4. lamb meatball, manchego cheese, sauce
          5. some flatbread with local greens, salted serrano ham and some spanish peppers. this was tasty

          6. bavette steak with romesco sauce

It was a lot of food but very good. you can dine in or alfresco. I would recommend alfresco because one thing that absolutely sucked about the place was the smell in the air. Rather than smelling the food, all you smell is smoke from the wood stove, and not in a good way. You leave the restaurant stinking like campfire. It is overpowering and annoying and also not what you want from a tapas place. Maybe a roadside BBQ place, but not tapas. I asked if that was standard and she said that they have had trouble with the fans since they opened and it is their #1 complaint.

That being said, the food was good, or at least what we tried. The owner is a guy from Philly that is optimistic about the food scene in SLC. This place has a very neighborhoody vibe, which I view as a good thing.

We tried this tonight. Sheesh. Absolutely delicious. The brussel sprouts with bacon and sherry cream blew my mind. The lamb belly with grilled apples was the other standout, but everything we tried was really good.

I forgot to come back and give my thoughts. We've been a few times in the past year. It's really good. I'd also chime in to recommend this place. Very good.
