    Continuing adventures in curry cooking

After finding a good Asian Market in Provo and finding the mae ploy curry pastes, I have started cooking and trying more kinds of curry. Tonight was red curry with thai pumpkin. Thai pumpkin came highly recommended in the curry by the owner. I also used kaffir lime leaves and thai basil for the first time in the curry.

The basil and lime leaves did make a big difference in the flavor. The thai pumpkin is very good, but was a complete pain in the ass to peel. It has a nice soft and almost creamy texture and goes great with the red curry.

So far I have made massaman, red, and green curry. I'm deciding between panang and yellow curry for the next one.

No but if you are ever in Portland, I can point you to a great Indian restaurant. I wish I knew how to cook Indian curries. I like the Thai curries but they are not up to the same standard as the Indian curries.

Charmaine Solomon is a good regional specialist, although her forte is really Thai food. But if you want to try lots of regional curries, she has recipes from most Asian countries including exotics from Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Laos and Cambodia.

Most people generally point to Madhur Jaffrey as the best source for Indian curry recipes. Google any one of her BBC presentations. I prefer indian curry recipes from British sources to indian curry recipes from India or Pakistan. The native recipes seem more uneven, or refer to scarcer ingredient sources.

Your thai pumpkin curry sounds delicious. I'm all about texture. Have you ever done an eggplant curry? I'm wondering how the pumpkin compares, texture-wise.

Also, have you found a source for galangal? You'll need it for the panang.

India Princess in Hillcrest is pretty good. Parking is tough but can be validated.

Oops I meant to type Salt Lake City. Best in San Diego IMO is Monsoon in the Gaslamp.

I love Monsoon. I took the family there last summer.

Himalayan Kitchen is good and the critic in the City Weekly raves about a place in Bountiful called Taste of India but I haven't been there yet.

I like Taj India because it's the only place I know of that does a dinner buffet. That's where we do our mission reunion dinner every year.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

Taste of India is not in Bountiful.

The one in Bountiful is Royal India.

Taste of India has much better food than Royal India. Taste of India is located in Layton. The owner/manager is also very flexible. The food is all made to order. So, if you are lactose intolerant, for instance, instead of cream, they will use coconut milk in your dish.

I have yet to make it to Himalayan Kitchen. I have heard nothing but good reviews.

That being said, in Davis and Weber County, Taste of India is by far the best. It's as good if not better than any of the Indian places I tried in Portland.

Taste of India is the one I'm talking about. I didn't realize it was up further north. I've got to try it.
