  • The Meat Loaf Thread

Meat loaf is a simple, humble North American dish that is delicious all out of proportion to the ease of making it. A monkey could make it. But it strikes me there is infinite potential for variations. This seems like a good place to investigate such possiblities. Thoughts?

Grind up absolutely anything in your fridge or cupboard and stir it into raw hamburger meat. Add an egg and season to taste.

          Hope that helps.

Recently, instead of topping it with a tomato-based red sauce, my aunt did the Utah thing and topped it with a white sauce. I think the only two ingredients were a can of cream of mushroom soup and all of the drippings from the pan.

I'm thinking toss in some blue cheese crumbles or cheddar or mozzerela, in addition to a lot of onions.

Blue cheese sounds lovely. Better yet you lucky Seattleite, you can buy some local "No Woman" brand cheddar cheese with a jamaican jerk flavoring.

"Beecher’s Handmade Cheese makes a jack-style cheese called “No Woman.” Named for the Bob Marley song “No Woman, No Cry,” the cheese is flavored with a Jamaican jerk spice blend,* as well as a smidgen of brown sugar"

I've tried it and it is yummy on hamburgers and probably on meat loaf too. Positively squirmy.

Pike Street Market's a three minute walk from my office. I'll check it out.

Best meatloaf I've ever had is at the Hayes Barton Pharmacy Cafe in Raleigh. Don't let the name fool you -- it's the home of the best comfort food in the city. The meatloaf is exquisite. And it's right in the middle of the Five Points neighborhood, known locally as "Johnedwardsville."

That's slow death in a glass pan. You shouldn't be eating it.

i enjoy some iterations of meat loaf and find it rather tasty depending on how it is prepared. the old generic mushy crap that is doused in ketchup is gross, though, I would agree.
