  • The secret to movie theater popcorn - flavacol

I love movie theater popcorn. I have no problem paying $12 for popcorn and a drink when my ticket only cost $10. I want to make my own movie theater popcorn at home. I've got the old fashioned crank popper and I've recently learned that the secret to the yellow, salty, delicious fake butter is a product called "flavacol." Also, using coconut oil instead of vegetable oil.

There are lots of places online that sell this stuff, and for ~2.00 for a quart (which apparently will last for 5 years b/c you only need a tablespoon or less for each batch), but shipping is always $10 or more. I've read online that restaurant and concessions stores sometimes carry it locally. Now that I've got movie theater popcorn on the brain, I'd like to make some NOW! Anyone bought this stuff before?

I'm fat enough as is so I'm never experimented with trying to duplicate movie theater popcorn.

I'm a popcorn fanatic. I have had this product for a few years, and it's alright but I don't think it's significantly different than regular salt. Unfortunately the more butter/oil the better the popcorn. It would be nice if a zero calorie butter flavor topping existed, but I don't think it does.

I've heard that this stuff is not much more than ground salt and coloring. I have the ground/powder salt. Have you tried just throwing that stuff in with the oil?

It seems like I've experimented with that, but either didn't work or didn't taste any different. Maybe I should try again. For me, nothing beats basic popcorn cooked with oil in a pot over the stove, with real butter and salt as topping.

p.s. damn you falafel, I've been cutting carbs.

For me, real butter and table salt combine for a super salty and mushy batch of popcorn. Not my fave.
