  • St. George Dining

I know it's the middle of a big basketball game & all, but would any of you have any restaurant suggestions for St. George? Bonus points for Mexican.

Lest anyone is feeling sassy, yes, I know Jack in the Box has tacos.

That was going to be my recommendation.

Benja has great Thai food. It's right by the Pizza Factory. I've heard Painted Pony is also really good, but it's a little pricey.

For authentic Mexican food, you really can't go wrong with Del Taco. Or Cafe Rio.

We opted for Panama Grill in the same complex. I'll let you know if I'm sick tomorrow.

So far my only complaint is the music, "If you don't know me by now."

Hey...your fellow socal food snob RF seconded my opinion on Benja.

Back off. We don't want you in ST. George anyway.

robinfinderson eats velveeta cheese sandwiches. You may be mis-categorizing him.

Eh. Panama had good chips & salsa. The fish tacos were average & they know nothing of chili rellenos (all chicken , nearly no cheese), bad beans, okay rice. I wouldn't consider eating anything but an appetizer there in the future.

Yeah, but Velveeta from Whole Foods.

Strange that the "Panama Grill" would not have good Mexican food. Panama's Mexican for something, right?

A late reply on the topic of St. George Dining....

In regards to Mexican food....St. George has one very good place and several so-so establishments.

The very good: Ernestos. It is on the BLVD in the upper part. Excellent food and easily wins best mexican in St. George year after year.

Sushi: The Thai restaurant located at Pioneer Square where Pizza Factory is.

"Fine" Dining: Cosmopolitan Steakhouse in Sliver Reef, simply the best restaurant in the St. George area,

                      Anasazi Steakhouse on Sunset. Excellent

Painted Pony: Very good, but a bit overrated

The Gun Barrel: A very good wild game Steakhouse on Bluff Street near the new theaters.
If you don't like your job, you don't strike! You just go in every day, and do it really half assed. That's the American way. - Homer

I actually know this without having to look it up. It was a culture capsule in an old textbook I used a few years back.

Panamá = Kuna Indian for "donde abundan los peces" (Where fish are plentiful).

Regarding dining in St. George.......cook at home. My wife's from there and we go there all the time.......there aren't any great restaurants, and the continued existence of Paúla's (The accent is incorrect, superfluous, and annoys the neon-hell out of me) is proof positive why St. Georgians don't have amything better. The natives like crap. There's no decent local dining place since they tore down Dick's. Larsen's Frost Top is a shell of its former self, and Charlie's just sucks now. The place has like 10 drive-ins.

If you ask the locals they'll rave about how "yummy" everything is. "Thanks so much, you guys!"

On the other hand, I've never seen a place on earth with better customer service or more attractive women.

I realize this is too late to help you, BBB, but I find Don Jose's to be the most palatable mexican food in St. Double G. Too bad I didn't get on earlier. I could have warned you about Panama Grill. A few of my favorite places in no particular order:

                            1) Mongolian BBQ in the Zion Factory Outlets. Is it significantly better than any other Mongolian BBQ place? Not really. But it is clean, and it is fun to watch them push the food around on the round cooking surface with a big bamboo stick.

                            2) The Bear Paw. Little dive down on Main just off St.G Blvd that serves breakfast all day. The closest thing to a diner since Dick's went out of business 10 years ago.

                            3) Fairway Grill. Strange name for a restaurant smack dab in the middle of St. George Blvd, but their chefs are genuine (i.e. professionally schooled and trained--that's saying something for St. G) and their menu is diverse and well thought out. Also, the specials are usually very tasty and reasonably priced.

                            4) Basila's Greek. They used to be up in Ancestor square, (in the place where Panama Grill is) but they shut down and "went out of business" to get out of the awful lease they were under. A handful of years later, they reopened down on 700 S. in more of an informal setting, but the menu and food are still above average.

                            5) Cosmopolitan. Very cool chef, very cool ambiance. The menu changes, reflecting what the chef finds at the store, and special recommendations can be made when you make your reservation. I believe the chef is from Eastern Europe and trained in France. Only open Thurs - Sun, and by reservation only.

A few places that were once great that are now average or out of business:

                            1) Cafe Rio. I still enjoy many of Cafe Rio's offerings, but back when there was only one, the food was better.

                            2) Larsen's Frostop. No longer owned by the Larsen family, and it shows in the food. Don't bother going for anything other than french fries or ice cream.

                            3) Charlie's. Used to have the best cheap sandwiches in town. Out of business now.

                            4) Gable House. This place was great. They had an upstairs where you could order a la carte, and downstairs you could get 3, 5, and 7 course meals. Here's a link to a funny experience my friends had at the Gable house: http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/...tml?id=2643790
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Cosmopolitan's been on my list for a while to try--I've heard great things about it, but there aren't too many excuses to visit Silver Reef. Thanks for the tip on the Greek place. I like the Bear Paw for breakfast. I'd heard good things about the Fairway Grill, but had been avoiding it because it just doesn't look right. Maybe I'll give in.

We had our wedding luncheon at the Gable House and that used to be the place to eat every time we came to St George growing up. Too bad it's gone.
