  • Let's talk about Rooibos

Do you like it? Do you hate it? I've been looking for a good herbal tea to drink at work, and I'd had many recommendations for Rooibos. I'm enjoying it so far.

That takes me, really, to a second question: How do you feel about herbal tea in general?

I don't differentiate. Same with iced tea, chai tea, etc.

I also don't drink coffee, decaf, Sanka, espresso, capuccino, etc.

I don't care if others do. I feel like I need to put that in there before people start flying off the handle.

Gidget is the herbal tea guru. She usually drinks licorice tea and prefers the brand Stash. We have Tazo herbal teas here in the office. I don't care for the mixed flavors.

I have never tried rooibos but it sounds good.

I drink herbal tea almost every night. I will occasionally drink chai and green teas, though large doses of caffeine frequently give me headaches.

            Not familiar with Rooibos.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Wait, now I'm confused... I can understand not drinking coffee, decaf, Sanka, espresso, etc... there's no need to differentiate there. However, there's a major difference between chai tea, for example, and herbal tea. What is the justification for treating those two the same?

I'm not baiting you... just curious. And I recognize that this comes on the heels of another WoW discussion even earlier today. I guess I've just always interpreted "tea" differently from "herbal tea," and I figured most others did, too. Now you've got me curious.

I'll be honest I never made the same distinction much before I met Gidget. Being a convert and a tea lover she now only drinks "teas" without tea leaves. So I guess in a sense, herbal teas aren't really tea.

While I love and regularly partake of herbal tea, I don't drink green tea. I really struggle with it, though -- it may be one of the main pieces of "doctrine" that I look at and really wonder, "why?!" I imagine that for someone like me, green tea is one of those things that makes me simply accept that some things don't make sense to me, but accepting them allows me to exercise faith.

I'm not sure how it's going to work out once I'm in Japan, though. From all I can tell, it seems like green tea is everywhere, at every meal. Do church members abstain from it there? I expect to be challenged on that by non-members there, and I need to start strategizing my explanation.

that is why I dont drink tea or coffee of any sort. pretty simple.

are herbal and chai teas exempt from that? iced tea?

That's been my approach and understanding as well.

If you called a glass of hot milk 'tea' it would still be milk.

Chai is made out of tea leaves. Ice tea is made out of tea leaves. Herbal tea is made out of non-tea flowers and plants, but it's called "tea" because it's prepared similarly to tea. But it's not tea.

If you call tea, "herbal tea," it is still tea.

So you are saying definitely that the sole reason we are asked to abstain from tea is because tea is derived from tea leaves?

I am learning new stuff every day.
