  • The Food Network

I have found that since college football has ended the food network is by far the channel that I watch the most now.

I turned the TV on this morning so my daughter could watch some kids shows and the food network was what I was watching last night before I went to bed. This prompted my daughter to ask, "Daddy, do you like cooking shows more than football now because you are always watching them?"

I find myself checking this channel first when turning on the tube to see what is on.

My favorite shows are Chopped and Iron Chef. Anyone else enjoy the food network? Are the some shows that I should be watching on there that I am not?

As you know I am also a fan, in fact I believe both of our wives asked if we were gay because one night at about 11:00 pm we talked on the phone while watching the Food Network. I was definitely showing some gay tendencies at that moment.

Good Eats. Alton Brown is the man. I do have to admit that his longer hair in those cranberry commercials is bad. But this guy knows his food.

I like good eats. Another one I forgot to mention was Dinners, Drive Ins and Dives. Love that one as well.

These two and Iron Chef are my faves. Gidget and me watch the Food Network together a ton. Though she's on this Investigation Discovery kick because she loves all the murder mystery shows.

I've been a FN watcher for about 6 years now, and after ESPN and our favorite network programs, it is by far the most-watched channel in our house.

Some of my favorite shows include:

Good Eats: Alton Brown is the "Bill Nye the Science Guy" of food. His approaches aren't always practical, but he's entertaining and i've learned a lot of little cooking helps from his show. If you can get past his facial mole (it took me a while) you'll like his show. NOTE: Some episodes of his are waaaaay too scientific to be enjoyable. But you can usually sniff those out pretty early on and delete them before you get too far along.

Throwdown with Bobby Flay: This show consists of Bobby surprising some cook in a cookoff of their own specialty item. I like to watch it just to cheer against Bobby (though sometimes the opponent is so loathsome that I find myself cheering for a tie.) I'm often surprised at how good Bobby's versions of the specialty items look, because they are usually pretty non-traditional.

Ace of Cakes: A reality show about Duff Goldman's cake-making shop in Baltimore. They make some pretty cool cakes.

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives: Guy Fieri travels around the country to local dives and eateries and samples their menu offerings. Usually pretty entertaining just to see the different menu items and specialties at different dives.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

              I love Food Network.

              My most hated shows are:

30-minute meals - Rach Ray is annoyish! Though I do like watching her battle with weight. I predict that in three years she'll be unemployed and 250 lbs.

Paula's Party - Y'all could stand to use less butter

              Ace of Cakes - Booooring

Down Home with the Neeley's - Get a room you two

Everyday Italian - What's Italian for anorexic?

              Favorite shows are:
Dinner Impossible with Robert Irvine - Robert is back after his short penance. No Dinner is impossible for that Brit.

Good Eats - Bringing knowledge and recipes to the masses.

Eating Healthy with Elie Krieger - Good recipes on this show.

Throwdown - I love it when Bobby wins and the contestant is pissed.

Iron Chef - The Chairman is my fav. He needs his own show, even if he's not a cook.

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives - I enjoy the show, but I think Guy is a sellout for doing Friday's commercials.

Work for Food - Adam Gugler is awesome.

Guy's Big Bite - Very good recipes and you get to see Guy's scumbag friends.

I like the challenges also. Especially the cake ones. I like Throwdown too. And Ace of Cakes is entertaining also.

I am not a big fan of Ace of Cakes of as well. Mrs. Hot Lunch loves it though so I end up watching it often.

I need to try Throwdown and Guy's Big Bite. I haven't watched those ones yet.

Not a fan of Dinner Impossible. It wasn't even tolerable when Michael Symon was hosting.

One of my favorite FN shows is relegated to the late-night/early morning hours. "Party Line with the Hearty Boys" is a show done by a gay couple who runs a Chicago catering business. I love the show for the gay humor (not inuendo, mind you. Just dry humor between two gay guys) and becuase the recipies are usually very reasonable (i.e. I won't have to go to the store and drop $50 on spices and other things I'll never use again) and delicious.

Here's a picture of Dan and Steve:

I also enjoyed the "Calorie Commando" which is no longer on. People would submit their favorite unhealthy recipe to the Commando, and he would tweak it, attempting to maintain the deliciousness while reducing the fat and other unhealthy aspects of the dish. He would then make it for them and ask them how it compared to the original. It was comedy gold wasching the people struggle to "enjoy" the new recipe and hearing them express how "it's almost as good as the original!" all while trying not to puke. High comedy.

On the days when I'm home most of the day, I always switch to the Food Network at some point. Since I travel so much, I like the shows that feature different joints around the nation, and sometimes I hit them up if convenient.

Presently I am babysitting in Pleasant Grove and ate at Chadders on Saturday (not by choice). Suffice it to say Chadders will never be on the Food Network. For a place that claims to be In-N-Out, it is nothing like In-N-Out.

Not on as often, but Tyler's Ultimate. Nothing too crazy, but I've tried some of his stuff and it usually comes out quite good.

Good Eats is arguably the show that put FN on the map.

I liked Jamie at Home, but apparently nobody else did.

And Nigella does something to me....I could watch her for hours. Also another one that hasn't been on lately.

Much as I like to watch FN, I've found that the better actual cooking happens on the public broadcasting cooking shows.
