I was happy with this recipe as well. Although, I did feel shame for wasting my time making gimmick food.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThis discussion got me craving khao soi today and the wife and I decided to make a batch. We tried this recipe:

but used bean sprouts instead of the fried noodles on top. It was excellent.

Not allrecipes, but since we are talking Portland gimmick food, this recipe does a good job with approximating the Lardo pork meatball bahn mi.
We warned though, I think there is a huge mistake in the recipe. It calls for a tablespoon of salt, which made it way too salt the first time I made it. It was still decent with the picked vegetables. The second time I made it, it seemed a bit too sweet when I cut the salt down to a teaspoon. I'm going to give it a try with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon a sugar next time.
Also, if you really want the siracha mayo to be great, make your own mayo instead of buying some. We almost never have mayo in the house and when we do buy it, a lot goes bad. I've talking to making mayo whenever it is needed and it is well worth the extra time.

I use allrecipes almost every time I set foot in the kitchen. I haven't had a bad recipe on anything with at least 4.5 stars and more than a couple of reviews.
I was in charge of sides and a dessert yesterday.
For my sides I went with:
Bacon Wrapped Brown Sugar Little Smokies
and
Bacon Cheddar Deviled Eggs
And for dessert:
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cupcakes
Smokies were incredible, although I had to cook them about twice as long as the recipe submitter suggested to get the bacon nice and crisp. I also followed the suggestion of many of the comments and used a lot more brown sugar than the recipe called for. I also flipped them a couple of times while cooking, added more brown sugar each time.
I love deviled eggs, but have always used either paprika or bacon bits. This was the first time that I've used actual bacon. Loved it. In addition to the bacon that was in the yoke mixture I also crumbled a couple of extra piece to add to the top.
The cupcakes were outstanding. Who would have thought that chocolate chip cookie dough would work so well in a cupcake. The key to this one was definitely freezing the cookie dough beforehand so it kept its consistency while cooking the cupcake. Used a favorite buttercream frosting from the ladies at Our Best Bites.
My wife made a couple of different types of hot wings, to go along with the Pulled pork sandwiches (steelblue), smoked ribs (Orangeute), and other sides and desserts that people brought. So much goodness for one meal, especially on the tail end of fast sunday.

Someone made those little smokies last night at our party too. They were definitely tasty.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

bacon is very difficult to cook and chop in bulk. also, people rarely have cured meats on hand because of their perishability.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI've never used bacon bits in deviled eggs. I understand your general point (and I am a fan of the costco bacon bits), but that's funny.Originally posted by old_gregg View Postbacon is very difficult to cook and chop in bulk. also, people rarely have cured meats on hand because of their perishability."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Just yesterday someone gave me a free package of bacon with the only stipulation being that I had to pick it up at their home. They left the package of bacon in their mailbox. No problem!Originally posted by old_gregg View Postbacon is very difficult to cook and chop in bulk. also, people rarely have cured meats on hand because of their perishability.

Are bacon bits not simply cooked bacon that has been chopped/diced/crumbled/whatever? What is the distinction that is being drawn here between bacon bits and "real" bacon? I know what imitation bacon bits are, but those are not actually bacon bits. They are exactly what the name implies - an imitation of the real thing."What are you prepared to do?" - Jimmy Malone

there really is no difference between bacon bits and real bacon. so next time you are making breakfast, fry up some eggs, put them on your plate, then head over to the fridge, open up a bottle of bacon bits, and pour a pile next to the eggs. You make them ahead of time and refrigerate them in a bottle? I guess I don't see the point in that. It takes 2-3 minutes in the microwave to get some bacon ready to crumble into bits.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postthere really is no difference between bacon bits and real bacon. so next time you are making breakfast, fry up some eggs, put them on your plate, then head over to the fridge, open up a bottle of bacon bits, and pour a pile next to the eggs.
