  • Mariachis, and Tongue Tacos

So, our local Mexican joint, par excellence, is having a live mariachi tonight. I've invited the whole campus to it, and I'm excited, because live music is always interesting.

But, I'm more excited for the tongue tacos this place makes. They're on a double corn tortilla with onions, green and white, cilantro, lime wedge, roasted tomatoes, and the softest tastiest tongue meat one could imagine. Their chorizo tacos are also really good. You have to order these off the "menú."

SkinnyTough loves tongue tacos. He asked about them at a Mexican restaurant when he was very young, and I told him that they were delicious, and they have been his taco of choice ever since.

I had cow tongue soup once. It was tasty but I couldn't get past the taste buds

I had to settle for chorizo last night. A fun tidbit. The band came around to each table and asked for requests. But, they wouldn't always play your request. I got them going the first time with "El Rancho Grande." All five of them screamed, "RANCHO GRANDE" in unison, and started playing. The next time, I asked for "Cielito Lindo." Again, the united scream and the beginning of the song. The last time, they came around, I said, "México, Querido y Lindo" and they hemmed and hawed; I then said, "De Colores" the lead singer/guitarrón player said....es de......I then said, "Mi Jalisco" and they all yelled "JALISCO" and started playing.

My wife joked, "you have to keep naming songs until you guess one that they like."

SkinnyTough is Little Robin's PS3 name. A number of folks here know him pretty damn well as SkinnyTough.

There actually aren't any. The outer skin of the tongue turns almost leathery while cooking. My favorite part of cooking them (besides eating) is peeling the outer skin off. If you're really good you can do it without tearing it and you end up with a cool tongue mold.

Fixed that for you. In the Latin America, slow roasting for hours renders everything soft.
