Have any of you participated in something like this?

We started a few weeks ago:

    http://www.bountifulbaskets.org/

We have loved it and are eating better because of it.

We're exploring vegetables and fruits we haven't before.

The place to pick it up is right around the corner from us. It fills up quickly and last Monday I forgot to set the alarm to go online and get a spot. I ended up going out to eagle mountain which isn't that far.

But I am really excited about this. I've heard about it before.

Yeah, just sign up for an account. Then look at the times that the offers come out for an area.

For us in Lehi, it is 8PM on Monday nights. Log in at that time and go pick a location. The slots in our pickup area seem like they are filled up in 30 minutes or so. So you have to get on there at the right time.

I think the first time you need to pay something like $3 for the Coop membership. Then just pay for the fruit/Veg basket and anything else you want that they offer. This week we got the 9 grain bread. I tried it this morning and liked it.

Then you go to the place at the time specified with a laundry basket or whatever you need to carry the stuff in. Don't show up early or they will put you to work.

They ask you to take a box home to throw out.

Community Supported Agriculture has become quite popular out in North Carolina, especially in the Triangle. It's a great model in which the consumers take on the farmer's risk rather than forcing him/her to carry that burden. The farmer is able to purchase seed in advance and set aside enough money to pay for their leased land. It's a fantastic model that benefits both small farmers and people who love fresh vegetables. I really hope it catches on all over the US.

We're looking to join this particular CSA next spring: http://www.double-t-farm.com/ .

The nice thing about it is the first time cost is something like $3. It not like the Wasatch Coop where they want $300 to be a Member.

I ordered a basket tonight. It will be interesting to see what we get and the quality of it. I'll be picking up in Lehi.

How big of a container should we plan on bringing (since it's bring your own basket)?

Most people bring the rectangle shaped laundry baskets. You should be able to fit it all into one basket. When they put it out for you to take, they have them in 2 smaller circular laundry type baskets.

My sister in West Jordan has been doing it for awhile now and they love it. The quality of the fruits and veggies are outstanding. My aunt in Rigby runs the program there.

Not with the Coop I mentioned.

You buy a set amount of food. You don't get to decide what you get. There are usually 6 types of fruit and 6 types of vegetables. You can also buy more than one portion if you like but it is the same 6 fruits and vegs.

It's been good for us because we've explore fruits and vegetables we wouldn't otherwise try.

I might also give this one a try as it has a low cost of entry. For $24 bucks in July you get 2 lbs of chicken thighs, 1 lb of ground beef, 1.5 pounds of beef stew meat, 2 lbs of pork loin roast, 5 fruits, and 5 vegetables. That sounds like a really good deal to me. I'm actually somewhat skeptical of it because of the price.
