  • Thai House

I can't believe it's taken me this long to sing the praises of Thai House in Lehi (their primary location with a second location that recently opened up in Draper). This little restaurant is fairly unassuming (I joked before we actually went that it more looked like the Thai House of Death), but very delicious. We receive consistently good service and the food is always good. Some people chat up Thai Village in American Fork, but nothing I had there possibly compares in my opinion.

Thai House is fresh, fast, and one of the only places that seems to take me seriously when I ask for "four stars" heat. They will even bring me a little side of their chili powder so I can customize the spice. Their lunch special runs from 11:30 AM–3:30 PM and for $7, you get an appetizer, a generous serving of one of their entrees (it rotates daily, and the Mussaman curry is available every day), and a dose of their delicious tom-ka or tom-yum gai. The dinner menu is also reasonably priced and makes for fast and cheap take-out. The Pad woonsen and panang curry are my favorites du jour, and the mango sticky rice is heavenly.

Just chicken, as far as I know.

Tom Ka Gai, by definition, has chicken because Gai means chicken in Thai. You can have Tom Ka with shrimp (Gung, or Kung if you romanize like an LDS missionary) but then it wouldn't be Tom Ka Gai - it would be Tom Ka Kung.

I know this isn't Lehi but have you ever tried Thai Chili Garden in Orem just off of 8th north and State St.? I love that place. I will have to try this place in Lehi. I love Thai food. I have driven by it a couple of times and have always wondered if it was good or not. I have tried Thai Village in A.F. and IMO it didn't compare to Thai Chili Garden in Orem.

I tried the Taco place that MP suggested the other night on Main St. in Lehi and really enjoyed it.

Really? I think Thai Village is a thousand times better. Been to the Thai house twice and it was chicken and ketchup. Didn't enjoy it at all. Maybe I'll give it another shot, what did you get?

4 star heat, meaning 4 out of 4? All these Thai places have different scales. Once I get used to a 1 to 10 scale, the next place goes to 1 to 5. I've even had a 1 to 3 scale. That's way too few stars for a proper spectrum. I'd hate to have to order a 2.15 on a scale of 1 to 3.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

We haven't tried Thai Chili Garden. Thanks for the tip. We've tried Thai Ruby that some people go gaga for, and have never understood the hype. Same deal more or less with Bangkok Grill; it was all right but unremarkable.

Thai food is good stuff. Since we've learned to make a lot of the curries, we don't eat it out so much, but Thai House is quality. We'll have to check out Thai Chili Garden.

Ketchup is from India. Are you thinking of the right place?

They have a 4-star scale. I usually ask for "4-star plus." Many places featuring spicy food of any variety (e.g.s Chinese, Thai, Indian) have some sort of "off the menu" spice offering. At Himalayan Kitchen in Salt Lake, if you wish to have your nosehairs singed, ask for your food "Nepali" style. The Singapore noodles at Joy Luck ordered "authentic" style are also really hot (the native manager won't eat it).

And yes, it's definitely different everywhere. There's a place in Orem called Spicy Thai and their "as hot as you'll make it" is positively laughable.

Really? I can't imagine we're talking about the same restaurant.

The Mussaman curry is delicious. I tried the panang today and it was also wonderful. Of the noodles dishes, I think we've only tried the pad woonsen with tofu and it's delicious and perfectly prepared every time. I also really prefer the mango sticky rice at Thai House to Thai Village.

Looking at the menu, you can order the soups with shrimp.

What do you recommend? Both times we went, the service was surly and condescending, and I only tolerate that from places with truly exceptional food. (The old India Oven in Hawthorne in Portland was one such place. During one visit, the waitress came over to refill our waters without ever having taken our order. The food was a spiritual experience, though.)

Anyway, what's good? I remember we ordered curries of some variety, but I can't recall exactly at the moment.
