  • Bosch v. KitchenAid

I grew up using a Bosch. I love some of the features of newer KitchenAids, like the hinging top half. I had planned sometime in the indefinite future to purchase one.

My parents kind of nixed this plan as they purchased me a Bosch as a graduation present. (Yeah, yeah. I get the metaphor. I can make the bread, but I can't be the breadwinner yadayadayada.) It was a very generous present. My mom reportedly based her decision on some cursory research she did claiming that the KitchenAid motors can wear out with regular use.

So, Bosch or KitchenAid? It seems we're going to be a Bosch family, too.

This was a big issue in our house.

My wife was big kitchenAid. My aunt was a Bosch distributer and everyone got one as a wedding present including us.

We used the Bosch for 8 or so years and found a deal on a KitchenAid. We now have both but the wife primarily uses the KitchenAid.

I think I personally prefer the KitchenAid.

My dad recently did some research on stand mixers and said he learned that KitchenAids are not built like they used to anymore. He ended up buying a Cuisinart.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

We have a Kitchen Aid and its been great. However, a Bosch rep in my ward swears that the Bosch motor is better and, as Beefy notes, wears out sooner.

I don't have any first hand experience with the Bosch, and our KA has been nice so far.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Interesting. My friends with KitchenAids all love them. I'm not the type to exchange a perfectly functional gift, I suppose. Worst case scenario, we use it until it either breaks or we can afford to replace it with a KitchenAid (space is also an issue since we're in an apartment. I can't imagine where I'd put BOTH a Bosch and a KitchenAid.).

I like them both. I prefer the Bosch for bread dough & attachments. I like the traditional hinge on the KitchenAid for other things. While the KitchenAid is the one on the kitchen counter, I still end up hauling the Bosch upstairs once a month or so.

I bake a lot more bread than I do cookies and cakes, so I'm glad to hear that. My parents did include the cookie paddles with the Bosch, though, so I suppose that's still an option. Unless I'm making a huge batch of cookies, I always thought they were easier to mix by hand anyway rather than dragging out the big old Bosch.

The biggest issue with the Bosch is that the beaters break under too much pressure. The metal ones can bend, or the plastic gears break. So make sure you are using the right attachments.

Yes, I witnessed that when I tried to use the wire whip attachment to make a stiff cookie dough with my parents' machine. Big mistake! Shards of plastic everywhere and metal embedded in the cookies.

The dough hook is pretty failsafe and effective, IMO.

Oops. I just knew that it was in one of the preceding posts.

My aunt gave us a KitchenAid for our wedding. I think in the 6 years that we have been married, we have used it maybe a total of 10 times and that number might be to high. Mrs. Hot Lunch is not a baker. I don't think our motor is going to wear out anytime soon.

It's all good. Not everybody grew up baking bread like I did. I need to get into some of the fancy schmancy artisan bread, though.

You've inspired me to go home and attempt a loaf of bread. Used to make it for the fam as a teenager, but the habit died long ago. Thanks, (most recent) Funk, JD.
