The milk that I had eaten with my cereal for breakfast had curdled and turned into a kind of cheese in my stomach. When I read about this cheese from breast milk I puked up a bit of my stomach cheese and reflexively swallowed it back down.

Does it strike anyone as odd that humans are grossed out by the thought of consuming human milk and milk products but not the same thing from cows? I'm the same way, but it's not intuitively obvious to me that it should be that way.

SU, I think it has a lot to do with our ability to disassociate the milk from what it really is -- the white runny excretion of a cow's mammary glands. Anyone who has ever seen or handled a distended lactating human breast will find that memory quite hard to shake. In contrast, for most of us, milk is something we buy in a carton or jar. That is a far cry from any runny glandular excretion. Marketing is the business world's attempt to define associations. The carton and jar were really good ideas. Milk from a jar is far more appealing than flopping a cow's teet into your mouth.

I understand that human milk is quite a bit sweeter than cow milk. Might be interesting to try. Actually, I just grossed myself out. It doesn't seem logical, but there it is.

Cheese now ice cream made from breast milk...

This ice cream is local, natural and totally free-range, but will the health department approve? Icecreamists, a shop in London's Covent Garden, today began selling ice cream made from breast milk.

Called "Baby Gaga," it's made with Madagascar vanilla pods and lemon zest then served in a martini glass with liquid nitrogen piped in through a straw. It doesn't come cheap: £14 (~$23) per serving. The milk comes from mothers who answered an advertisement on Mumsnet. (£15 per 10 ounces, and donors had to undergo a health screening.)
