  • Anniversary Dinner

I'm off for an anniversary dinner tonight. I will be going to a highly touted steakhouse here but I'm thinking that maybe a roast rack of lamb might be in order since I had steak on New Year's Eve. I know that I probably should order some fish to be healthy and keep the weight off, but cow flesh just tastes too good.

Green chiles don't really go with fish. Stick with beef.

You are right on that point. I can't think of any fish dishes with green chile. Then again, with all the water in New Mexico it's a wonder we find any fish at all.

So I have to report on the dinner. The rack of lamb was excellent. For the price, I thought there should have been more meat on the rack, but the taste was superb, probably second only to a rack of lamb I had in Rome, Italy a couple of years ago at a non-descript hotel in the University area. My wife had the Veal Oscar which was also very good. I started the meal with a Caprese salad with pancetta which was excellent, but the highlight of the meal was a lobster bisque. It was wonderful. The whole meal cost about a hundred bucks (and we don't drink), so it was expensive, but enjoyable.

Reading through the beginning of the post, I'm thinking "McClain drops some serious coin on food." Then I get to the last part and now I'm confused.

            That's 100 NEW MEXICAN dollars.

Please elaborate. I have a tough time seeing how this could come off well.

For most people $100 for a dinner for two is serious coin.

Maybe. But when I'm reading about dinner in a hotel in Rome, I'm picturing a few hundo for dinner. Then I get to the end and he kind of caught me off guard by saying $100 is expensive.

We had a poll about this.

I guess you could say that cost is relative. One hundred bucks for a meal without any liquor and without dessert is expensive for Albuquerque. There are maybe two other restaurants in town (Albuquerque) where you would find similar menu prices. (We have a pretty reasonable cost of living here). Now I have spent more money than that at restaurants in Europe, New York, San Francisco and even Salt Lake City, but this was top dollar in Albuquerque. I don't spend that kind of money locally except for special occasions. When I travel, I expect to spend more. So that is why I referred to the meal as expensive. It is all relative.
